As the forecast turns to frost warnings here in Canada, some of us eagerly anticipate the ice and snow, and some of us yearn for summer. If you’re in the latter category, join me in exploring a modern villa on a serene Pacific bay. Let’s leave the True North behind for a bit and head to the ‘winterless north’ of New Zealand.
Not only is this six-bedroom, six-bathroom home on the waterfront, there are even ocean views from the rear. The property also includes a three-bedroom house for guests — or the gardener in charge of these lush, manicured grounds.
This is the epitome of 'open plan'; the glass wall in the great room folds away to bring the outdoors in, while the clerestory windows make the roof seem to float above the space. My first move? Take away the TV — who needs it when you have that view!
The all-white kitchen is sleek and minimalist — except for that glorious, luxurious expanse of stone on the waterfall countertop. Beige flooring wouldn't have been my first choice, but it will camouflage any sand tracked in from the steps-away private beach.
Not only does the bathroom open to the sub-tropical climate and ocean views, it has generous mirrors, two sinks, and plenty of storage. I think I'm in love.
Paroa Bay and the surrounding area are a popular vacation spot. The nearest town, Russell, was the first permanent European settlement in New Zealand, and can be reached by road or car ferry.
Inspired by that fold-away glass wall? Check out a Canadian version in this year's Princess Margaret Showhome.
