Photo Blog April 30 Hotel Patio Finds Pool

I’ve never been to Los Angeles, but it’s finally occurred to me that a trip with the girls, which has been under discussion for about a year, should be to the city of angels. I started to look at hotels, but stopped after my first picks: the Viceroy and the Mondrian. Both are completely out of my budget! Above is the “salt-air-kissed sophistication” of the Viceroy’s decadent rooftop with its two plunge pools and elegant cabanas.

This is the lobby. I love the white and kelly green combo — fresh, airy and very stylish. And I love that it’s close to Santa Monica beach with a great running path nearby, apparently. I have my eye on the package with surf lessons.

Looking at these hot boutique hotels got me thinking about elevating a backyard or balcony in the same style. Here are some great finds to recreate the look at home.

Like this green lacquered garden bench from HomeSense for $250.

My mom always used to tell me that I have champagne taste on a beer budget. So, she wouldn’t be surprised that my second hotel pick is the Mondrian. I prefer the belief (I think it is Oscar Wilde?) that anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.

Anyway, the hotel was originally designed by Philippe Starck and then redesigned and made more inviting by Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz. The rooftop pool by day has a Club Monaco clean and cool vibe.

By night the space is transformed — teak stools, white cushions and loads of white candles replace the low white chaises.

This is the Asia de Cuba restaurant at the hotel. Notice the massive terracotta planters and ficus trees that create an allee for the line of tables.

These Bloom flowerpots by Rob Slewe come in large sizes and also have a light, which makes them handy, day or night. I’ve also seen the smaller ones used as ice buckets by the beach. They’re made of plastic, so they’re durable and easy to move around. You can get them through Canadian online store Generate.

Loungers to fit any budget can be found almost anywhere, but my favourites are from the California outdoor furniture company, Giati. They are available in Canada for trade only (through designers). Their designs are simple and handmade with great attention to detail — at once on-trend and timeless.

The Design Within Reach teak folding stool, like the ones by Mondrian’s pool, are practical outdoor pieces. Use them as side tables or seating and then fold them up for easy storage.

Until I can actually get away to L.A., I’m hoping for a sunny day to relax in a friend’s backyard with some chilled bubbly. After a day like that, it will be easy to imagine that we’re actually at the Viceroy, and not St. Clair and Spadina!
