I belong to a local craft group, where a couple of neighbourhood friends meet every other week to drink wine, eat homemade nibblies and make things. From knitting hats, assembling wedding photo albums and felting trivets to making paper, we are a productive group! My projects usually involve knitting, but this week I think I will branch out and try something new.
After visiting the Y&Co showroom the other week, I have become completely obsessed with embroidery. They have the most beautiful embroidered fabric by Vanderhurd right now that will knock your socks off! The patterns are mostly geometric on a neutral linen background, and they are just divine. The level of craftsmanship is very apparent by the consistency of these intricate patterns.

This combo of hand printing and embroidery is so pretty — it adds so much texture to simple linen.
Now, I’m not saying that I will attempt something this intricate on my first go, but I am noticing that there are lots of great ideas out there. Embroidered embellishments are definitely on trend right now, from simple blanket stitches to intricate patterns on pillows, tea towels, napkins — you name it!

For example, I love these embroidered napkins from Crate & Barrel — a simple upgrade to the classic white cocktail napkin.

This Criss Cross pillow from Company C is a fun take on traditional plaid.

And here's a really fun tea towel from Anthropologie with a hand-stitched pineapple.
As for my craft group, the project I’m going to attempt is from Natalie Chanin’s new book, Alabama Studio Style (2010 Abrams). Specifically, the Eyelet-Embroidered Placemats and Napkins.

Not only is the book beautifully shot, there are some great projects and a glossary of different stitches with easy-to-follow instructions. So, wish me luck, and I will post back with the progress…
