A big thank you to everyone who visited the Princess Margaret Welcome Home Sweepstakes Showhome, and those who took part in our Style Saturdays events — you made them a huge success! The final Style Saturday event, held last weekend at the Oakville showhome, saw House & Home editor-in-chief Suzanne Dimma sharing her secrets for timeless style, accompanied by stylist Trish Johnston, a lead designer on the showhome design team.
Audience members gathered in the gorgeous great room as Suzanne and Trish spilled their tricks of the trade for achieving effortless style, perfect for both everyday living and staging a home to sell. Visit our photo gallery to see photos from the event, too!
For those not lucky enough to snag tickets to see Suzanne and Trish in person, here are some of their tips for timeless design and successful home staging:
- Stick with a neutral envelope, like the showhome's mostly white walls. Neutral walls contribute to a home's flow, and, in the event you are prepping your home to sell, ensure that your home has mass appeal. You want buyers to be able to imagine themselves in your space, and neutral colours go with everything. Add colour and pattern with accessories and textiles.
- Investment pieces, like the classic sofas in the showhome's great room, are key to timeless style. A sturdy sofa in a classic shape can be slipcovered again and again in current fabrics, updating the room for a fraction of the cost of new furniture. Suzanne herself owns several different slipcovers for her William Birch sofa, and changes them frequently to refresh her space.
- Go trendy with smaller pieces, like the coffee table. In the showhome, the distressed wood coffee table looks current, but unlike the sofas, you can change it out without a huge investment when it starts looking dated.
A special thanks goes out to all of the sponsors who donated products and their time: Dolce Gusto by Krups, Purdy's Chocolates, IKEA Canada, Dermalogica, Emile Henry, Cuisipro, Grassroots, Smartwater & Vitaminwater, Para Paints and Home Hardware.
