I happily wandered around the online design universe again to bring you a fresh batch of Canadian blogs worth checking out. I was thrilled to get enthusasiastic comments on last week's post (Great Canadian Blogs) and I hope you find more to love in this roundup.
I wasn't surprised by the slew of blogs by Canadians sharing their renovation drama with those of us who'd rather read about dust than wade through it — H&H included. In our Renovator's Notebook blog, our senior editor Meg Crossley let us peek into her basement reno. Stay tuned: Her beloved Sicilians are gone, but Meg's back with a new construction-free blog at the end of the month. And in a few weeks you can start following Catherine Macintosh as she and her partner, Justin, blow apart the main floor of their first house.
At Aubrey + Lindsay you can spy on a pair of first-time homeowners as they share inspiration (above) and projects ranging from baseboards to basements.
Designers' own blogs are a great source of news, products and tips — a bargain compared with hiring a top firm for a few hundred an hour.
Ivan Meade of Meade Design Group in Victoria manages to run a multidisciplinary studio, uncover new eye candy each week and also post lengthy interviews with international design stars such as Jonathan Adler, Barbara Barry and Scot Meacham Wood of Thane Studio, who designed this grand entryway. Hands up if you never tire of herringbone-patterned hardwood.
Vancouver designer Lindsay Brown often wanders outside the mainstream design scene at the Ouno Design blog (we've featured her pillows in the magazine). Loved the simplicity and environmental cred of this PossibliTree she featured recently.
Atmosphere Interior Design in Saskatoon has great room shots on their website and design tips and new products on their blog (above). I also enjoyed the posts from Tina's House...A Client Diary about the reno adventure of one of Atmosphere's clients.
Just Beachy is the free-spirited blog of designer and DIY diva Christie Kauffman of CK Interiors. She's brimming with decorating ideas: A chalkboard for less than $7? Done (just waiting for a frame). An upholstered headboard with nailhead trim? Done (gorgeous!). An ugly mahogany coffee table turned tufted ottoman? Done (don't weep when you compare how much you paid for yours). Check out both of Chris' sites for projects she does around her beach-inspired home (the family room is above) and the makeovers she pulls off for clients.
And we end our designer site-hopping tour at the blog of Montreal's Igloo Design, where they just redid their firm's bathroom. I'm always drawn to the airy, floating quality of open vanities like this. Then I remember my richly cluttered life with two kids and not-super-tidy-but-otherwise-sweet husband. For now, it's closed storage all the way. But a girl can dream...
Besides designers, of course there are legions of decor fans keeping style-conscious blogs. Halloween decor that isn't scream-inducing is always a treat. Saw this at Wallpaper.
If you appreciate homemade goods and the people who create them — and if you have etsy.com on speed-click — then you'll love Poppytalk. Jan Halvarson takes you to the best booths at craft shows and features only the most interesting handmade stuff. The baker in me liked these cute cards and paper goods by The Beautiful Project from the Vancouver One of a Kind Show. If you want to see more of Jan's style, click through this photo gallery of her favourite finds.
Another popular blog I really like for the gorgeous-factor is Montreal-based Lake Jane. I like how this kitchen isn't afraid to show its guts with that row of pans. And the colour-blocked books? Love. In more ways than one. I adore our kitchen but that's one thing I wish I had more of: shelves for cookbooks. (There's a wee video tour here if you want to see how we reno'd our kitchen.) Cruise through this photo gallery to see Lake Jane style with favourites from creator Marie-Eve Best.
If we missed your favourite Canadian design blog, please share it in the comments. And let me know your favourite Canadian food blogs: you show me yours, I'll show you mine!
