I was in New York recently and stopped by one of my favourite stores in the city: Calypso St. Barth’s flagship home shop at 199 Lafayette Street. For inspiring summer style, there is no better place. Stepping inside, you feel instantly transported to a glamorous tropical getaway — I half expect India Hicks to greet me when I walk through the door. Like Hicks, the store has a natural chic that comes from mixing elements in fresh, interesting ways.

Colourful Silk Dress

Calypso white shirt

Calypso opened its first shop in 1992 and quickly became a hot spot for boho fashions like beaded caftans, tunics and colourful silk dresses. Its home line offers the same relaxed exoticism.

Vanilla Sky collection by Ankasa

When I visited, this mix of shining silver, nubbly linen and crisp white almost had me walking out with a metallic pouf under my arm. (If only it would fit in my suitcase!). Instead, I plan to spray-paint a few palm leaves and accessorize with silver pieces — candlesticks, vases — that I usually pull out only around the holidays. The silver-splashed pillows are from the Vanilla Sky collection by Ankasa.

vintage South American Rug

This window and table display show how graphic patterns bring natural finishes to life. The blue and red dhurrie rugs are John Robshaw designs. The orange and pink stripe is a vintage South American rug. The lamp, perfect for a beach house, makes me think of swaying underwater vines and grasses.

Tabletop inspiration

Insect motif plates

Some tabletop inspiration. Feathers and sea horses? Absolutely! The dinnerware is custom for Calypso by Laura Zindel, a Vermont-based ceramicist whose insect motif plates are featured in the July issue of House & Home.

Mimosa Candles

I did bring back a Mimosa Candle, which fills my bedroom with a beautiful subtle scent.

Summer stripes paired with a little Far East glitz

Summer stripes feel more sophisticated paired with a little Far East glitz, like this mirrored pillow and ceramic garden stool. If I had a small outdoor space, I’d furnish it exactly like this. I imagine myself sipping bubbly with a best friend while the sun hovers above the horizon late into the evening. Aaah, summer.
