One of the great things about my job is getting to source new products: furniture, paint, appliances, you name it. (My husband calls it shopping.) It’s great to see new lines season to season as they roll into stores, but I have to say, old products excite me just as much. You know, one of a kind pieces and great deals that you have to grab because you likely won’t find another?

Last week, I happened upon a small scratchy handwritten ad for an auction. I have to say my heart jumped a bit. Back at work I went from office to office, asking, “Who wants to come with me?!” — hoping someone would be as crazy as myself.

I did go that night, with fellow editor Meg Crossley, and it was so much fun. We were like kids in a candy shop — although I was a very good kid and talked myself out of everything except a McCoy cookie jar that I didn’t really need. It was only $20, so I couldn’t pass it up (it will make a great gift filled with homemade treats).

The one problem with auctions is that you must stay and move with the room, so if you like something on the opposite side of where the caller begins, you just have to stick it out with a poker face and wait. The other side of the room did have some great hanging pendant lamps — I call them barn lamps. I’ve wanted a couple for my son’s room, but I just couldn’t wait it out. They do seem to be a hot ticket these days, fitting right into the pendant lamp trend. Below are some options if you’re in the market for such a lamp, and don’t want to wait for an auction!

Ivanhoe Sinclair Industrial Porcelain Pendant in White, so nicely detailed.

Ivanhoe Aero 12” Shallow Bowl Porcelain Pendant in Jadite.

Benjamin 17” Bomber Porcelain Stem Mount Light in Yellow.

This new Vintage Barn Pendant in bronze from Restoration Hardware is very good-looking — I love the brass accent.

The Depot Ceiling Lamp from Pottery Barn Kids is also very smart, with a very grown-up look, if I do say so myself.

The Home Depot has a version available in brushed steel. It would paint up easily if you wanted to spray it a bright colour.
