Which would you like first: the good news or the bad news? The bad news is that this weekend’s forecast is calling for rain here in Ontario, but the good news is that there are so many fun DIYs you can do indoors, whether you’re at the cottage or in the city. Here are a few easy DIY projects I came across on my favourite blogs recently:

Photo Blog May 19 Long Weekend DIY Crafts

If the weather is a bit grey, stay indoors and scrapbook. Poppytalk Handmade, a Vancouver-based blog, promotes emerging artists by curating a collection of handmade and vintage goods from around the world. This handmade craft kit is great for scrapbooks, journals or photo albums. And you can easily pack it up to bring to the cottage.

Photo Blog May 19 Long Weekend DIY Kitchen Shelves

If you’re staying at home this weekend, take on those small projects you’ve been putting off. This photo from Desire to Inspire makes me want to organize my kitchen with simple jars like these. Open shelving can be tricky — you don’t want it to look too cluttered, but if items are kept tidy, it works. The different sizes and shapes of these glass jars and the rustic wood shelves add to the country feel of this kitchen, and it’s always nice to have commonly used ingredients at your fingertips. So, suss out your kitchen this weekend and see if you can make the most of your open shelving. Ikea sells some affordable jars if you don't have any vintage ones on hand.

Photo Blog May 19 Long Weekend DIY Accent Wall Paint

If you want to brave a project beyond crafting and organizing, painting a wall or two is an easy way to change up the look of a room without spending too much. Here are some inspiration shots from New York designer Steven Gambrel. Notice how he experimented with dark baseboards on the left, and an accent wall on the right. A bold accent wall is an easy, non-committal way to infuse a room with colour. And a three-day weekend leaves plenty of time for a couple of coats — even time to paint it back if you’re not happy with it!

Photo Blog May 19 Long Weekend DIY Mason Jars

Toronto bloggers Aubrey + Lindsay featured a round-up this past weekend of DIY Mason jar lanterns. Brilliant! Use glass jars, wire, sand and candles to create your own outdoor lighting, perfect for summer soirées. You can do the crafty work indoors, and then hang them along a fence or trees on the night of your party. Just remember to take them down before it rains.
