With winter fast approaching and a new puppy at home — almost house trained — I recently found myself digging out the wooly rugs that we'd stored away over the summer months. Looking at the once-bare floor now dressed for winter, I wondered: Do I still like that patterned wool flatweave that I bought last year?

Absolutely.

I love a warm floor and the colour and texture it adds to the room is lovely. So, the flatweave stays in the living room. My new love affair at the moment, however, is with Persian carpets — especially worn ones, threadbare in spots and oozing history. Angus & Company here in Toronto always has such gorgie things, and on occasion they find beautiful carpets that lay by the front door for sale, all grubby and fabulous.

So I’ve been looking and looking for an old carpet and finally found one at a junk shop for $35! It’s perfect — even has its cleaning tag from Turco Persian here in Toronto (they clean and repair carpets) and because of the price, I’ve placed it under the table in the kitchen where the kids eat. For a reasonable alternative, check out Ikea:

GAN, a Spanish design firm (created by Gandia Blasco) has a modern take on the classic Persian carpet. Their website has some fun carpets, have a look…

On the flatweave front, I was in Y&Co recently and they have super rugs and textiles. Look at these new beauties from Vanderhurd Studios in wonderful icy tones:

I love the fact that some of these wool flatweaves are now being woven with silk — so yummy.

With silk:

Even in furniture, rugs are seemingly making an impact. Take a look at this:

Striped Kilim Sofa from Anthropologie, upholstered in a cotton silk

This new sofa from Anthropologie is upholstered in a cotton silk upholstery that feels like a carpet. In fact, they have called it the Striped Kilim Sofa ($2,683). Love the depth of colour and texture of the pattern.
