Living Room With Painted Beams

Family heirlooms, like the elephant sculpture, intermingle with contemporary white sofas to great effect.

Los Angeles interior designer Kishani Perera worked with these homeowners, a young family, to create a light, airy and modern home with references to their Indian heritage. Since they didn't feel comfortable with colour on the walls, Perera relied on pieces of Asian art and select hits of saturated colour, common in Indian design, to add vibrancy. She also chose mostly solid upholstery for the large pieces, leaving the patterns to accent pillows or a chair in order to keep the look serene and global rather than over-the-top ethnic. Fabrics with lots of texture layer in dimension and interest.
