A Country-Inspired Exterior

A Country Inspired Exterior

Create cozy, country charm by painting exterior trim, doors and siding.

Q. We have recently purchased this home and are planning on painting the exterior doors, shutters and garage door to give the house a fresher look. The exterior siding is taupe with a pinkish hue. We are planning on replacing the siding in the near future. The roof has brown shingles and the garage is the same colour. My husband and I are looking for a cozy country look.

A. Your home looks very inviting. We agree that changing the colour of the shutters, garage door and front door will instantly update the look.

Think about choosing a colour that won't clash with the brown roof tiles. If you are considering replacing the siding, a very pale yellow or off-white would work well with the roof colour. Siding in a warm off-white like Benjamin Moore's Navajo White 947 and a cozy red like Country Redwood E-23 for the shutters would contrast beautifully and still be in harmony with the brown roof. Painting the garage door the same colour as the siding would give the house a more unified look.

For a clean, country look, paint the siding Benjamin Moore's Hawthorne Yellow HC-4 and paint all shutters and garage door a crisp, contrasting White I-01. Instead of painting the front door white, choose an inviting red like Benjamin Moore Cottage Red E-22 or a pretty country green like Tarrytown Green HC-134. This will add visual interest and a warm focal point to the front of your home.
