Wake up an old metal bed with a brand new look.
Even the plainest furnishings find romantic expression when painted and adorned with relief detailing. We turned a plain metal bed into a statement piece by treating it to fresh paint, patterned wallpaper and wood appliqués.
What it Cost
Bed $15
Paint $20
Appliqués $36
TOTAL $71*
Materials and Tools
- Simple metal bed frame
- Melamine paint (for frame)
- Latex paint (for trim)
- Sponge brushes
- Fine-grit sandpaper
- Wood-composite appliqués
- Clear silicone adhesive
We painted our bed chocolate brown, but any dark colour that contrasts with cream-coloured appliqués would suit this project.
Step 1: Paint bed frame
Disassemble bed frame, and clean it if necessary. Using a sponge brush, give the frame two coats of melamine paint (this will give it a very durable finish), allowing it to dry completely between coats.
Step 2: Paint and apply trims
Paint wood-composite appliqués with latex paint. Sand gently between coats. Mark the placement of the appliqués, and affix to head and footboard using clear silicone adhesive. Allow to dry overnight. Reassemble bed.
