Paint walls a dark and dramatic colour for a cosy effect.
"When choosing a wall colour for a basement, you should just embrace the space for what it is," advises H&H design editor Joel Bray. "It's not going to get any bigger, so a dark colour, or something with a bit more contrast, isn't something you should shy away from."
Stylist Arren Williams' basement was designed to be both practical and beautiful. A modern sectional sofa in a charcoal fabric can sit several people while two cane ottomans can be used as side tables or additional seating. To create the perfect setting for movie night, Williams chose a heavy, full-height velvet curtain to block out any unwanted light.
No windows big enough to escape from in your existing basement? Be prepared to splurge a bit on safety: "Egress windows (windows you can exit through in an emergency) are vital for creating a safe basement and carry a price tag of $1,500 to $2,000 each," warns HGTV expert Bryan Baeumler.
