If you were to take the frame down to the floor you'd have to have a "kick" like with kitchen cabinetry - otherwise you'd stub your toes every time you made the bed.
Personally I prefer having the bed off the floor. I've got a couple of those covered baskets from IKEA under mine where I store my out-of-season clothing.
And thanks, smoodgie, for posting that mock-up. It just gave me an idea for how to construct my own bed head. I've been hoarding some tin ceiling panels for years and racking my brains as to how to do it. The light bulb just went on. :)
Smoodgie, this is going to be so great! If you are looking for feet for your bed try winsdor plywood if you have it. I didn't like the feet on my new sofa so I bought the bun feet at windsor and stained, and laquered them. They turned out really beautiful. They had about 10 different styles.
Maybe the way to figure out the height/depth for the boxspring is to measure our duvet and see how far it covers. You don't want to build the thing and discover 2" of plain sheeted boxspring showing.
I think you'll have to leave a bit of room for making the bed - like you said RH has on their beds. What you may consider doing is purchasing a fitted sheet for the box spring - that way the little you see above the upholstered bed box will match and not be the matteress pattern.
Smoodgie, Love the 3D pic of the frame. Very much like what we are looking at that is the headboard part. I will be taking ours right to the floor though, as
I hate housework and having enough dust bunnies already don't need anymore.
Flowerpot.
Tango, yeah, the whole box is going to be upholstered.
janet, I have no idea when it'll be done. I bought the fabric in Feb 2007, so as you can see, it's been a while already
sweetpea, yes, it's going to be just like the Sarah R. bed. It's going to be upholstered in chocolate brown velvet with silver nailhead trim.
DBD, practical idea, but I'd like it to have legs.
Question: Should the side rails and foot rail be lower than the box spring or the same height as the box spring?? On all the upholstered beds on the Restoration Hardware web site, the box spring is a bit higher. I guess that makes it easier to put on the sheets and make the bed.
Love It! Can't wait to see the finished project!!
looking good!!!
Looks good. Just wondering if you could save yourself some work by taking that box down to the floor. It would save trying to clean under the bed or needing to find nice feet for the bed.
S moodgie; It is going to look awesome, especially if the box is also upholstered ;Sarah R's bed is soooo.....nice willyou do it like hers? if so what kind of fabric are you planning to use a solid or a print?
We will be anxious to see the finished product :)
i like it smoodgie....it is shaped much like sweetpea's headboard....so when is it done? has he started yet? :D
smiles
janetc
Cool!!
I assume that you'll upholster the bed box, too? If so... great!
