This definitely was not in my plans, but just after Christmas I discovered that there was water entering my basement and as evidenced by the mushrooms growing on the carpet L, mould and assorted other nasty things that would need to be corrected.  The home that I own is just about 100 years old (circa 1915) and with that age comes the understanding that a little facelift may be called for no matter how inconveniently timed (I opened a store, C’est Cheese Please! here in Galt, Cambridge and all my available monetary resources have been poured into this adventure!).  So trust me when I say that I have no cash but desperately want a little flash! OK, so the water issue has been rectified and a subfloor installed.  I have only done one half of the basement at this time as the other half will be done when I can do the kitchen reno that I have been dreaming of.  Pot lights have been installed and the laundry area will be re-worked along the front of the room.  I am planning on re-using the upper cabinets of some old kitchen cabinetry that was already in the basement.  The dryer will be against the side/front wall, laundry tub in between and the washer on the other side. Above the dryer and washer will be two hanging cupboards from these existing cabinets.  At the opposite end of the room will be some built-in cabinetry for storage.  The room, walls and ceiling will be dry-walled.  I plan to use the space in addition to the laundry function and storage, for an office area and sewing area.  My sewing cabinet is a new, white melamine cabinet that folds up and the existing desk is a vanilla white.  I was watching the video of the Ikea table and thought that if possible, I might do something like that to use as a cutting table – maybe in front of the washer/dryer much like an island in a kitchen?   I will not be able to afford to lay flooring at this time and it makes a little sense to wait until the other half is being done for consistency.  So, do you have some suggestions for what to paint the cabinets, walls and floor?  I love antiques and French country so modern, contemporary is out of the question!  About the floor, is there a suggestion as to a paint and then perhaps an area rug?  I do so want this space now that I am this far to be an area that I will want to go to sew and do paper work for my business and not feel that I am going into the dungeon!!  I am a creative person and need to have that release – in the summer, I have my garden and in the winter I would like this to be my go-to place Any suggestions would be gratefully received and I would post some pictures of the end result if that is possible!
