Air Exchanger Problems

Hello All,

I am having trouble with my air exchanger and I need a little info. I am trying to prepare for the winter in advance, so here's my problem. My intake vent for my air exchanger is too close to the ground for the amount of snow I get around my house. The vent sucks in snow and it melts in the vent line before it reaches the air exchanger. This causes a leak onto my basement floor. I am in the process of finishing my basement with a reckroom, but I can't do anything with my ceiling until I fix this problem. Does anybody know where I can get some sort of attachment to raise the vent up 3 or 4 feet on the outside of my house?

Thanks

It sounds like the vent was installed incorrectly. Was it there when you moved in or did you have it installed? If you are having problems in your basement this is pretty serious and I would have contacted the previous owners lawyer with some kind request for compensation for damages or gone after the installer to come back and re do properly and to have them pay for the basement damage too. The vent should be installed 3-4 feet from the ground, I'm not sure if this is Building Code or plain common sense but all homes that I have seen that have air exchanges have the vents at this height.
Get an estimate from a few heating companies, I don't think this is a part you can pick up at Rona or Canadian Tire.
