My hubby and I have been wanting to go on an Alaskan cruise for a number of years. It looks like we might actually be able to do it next summer.
Has anyone been on an Alaskan cruise?? Are there any particular cruise lines and times of the year that are better than others?? I'm thinking the end of June is the best time, seeing as that's when the days are the longest. And when the rates are the highest too, of course!!

a number of years ago -- on P&O. English and Goan crew. It was very good at the time (don't know about now). From Vancouver to the panhandle and back. Took a shore excursion to Lake Bennett on the narrow gauge railway up the Chilkoot Pass from Skagway. Some folks took their camper vans and got off there, to drive to Whitehorse. It was great fun.
We love "cruising"...... you don't have to "dress-up" every night...... resort casual is fine. We have been on cruises where maybe one night of seven was semi/formal. The entertainment is usually pretty good. Depending on the cruiseline the food is OK..... Carnival was very good.... NCL not so good. Hope this helps!
Remember liquor, pop, bottled water, tips, and excursions are extra..... Cruising is not for budget travel!!
I'll check out all those sources, thanks!!
My hubby just told me that he may get too antsy to wait till next year to go... I better do some research FAST!!
Definitely informal for us -- I wouldn't want to have to get dressed up for every meal!! I'm there to have fun, not to make a fashion statement :)
www.akferry.com has tons of info.
Formal or not is the big question we went on one that was way to formal for our taste. At first i thought it would be so much fun to get all dressed up each night. I shopped till I dropped before and now 8 years later the clothes I bought are still in the garment bag. I hated it so did my DH after 3 days I was so sick of people telling me when and how to dress. Also check into the average age of the guests ours were way to old for us. We'll never go again.
this dang 5 min, to edit is driving me nuts LOL.
You also have to look into how formal you want to dress on a cruise. Do you want formal every night at dinner? More laid back/casual?
I would hate to buy clothes that I may never or seldom wear after a cruise.
Here's a url from an email newsletter I recieve about cruises.

cruisecritic.com had valuable info.
You can find info on web sites and forums re: Alaska.
fodors.com and frommers. com are a few + tripadvisor.com
I would check out a guide on Alaska at a book store. Fodor's Alaska or similar. There are ways to cruise besides large ocean liners. There are different ports of call depending what ship you choose. You may want to tailor the cruise to fit which ports have more interest to you and DH. Also check into the rainy months for that area. Cruises cost plenty and you may as well do all the research you can. There are also travel agents who specialize in just cruises who can suggest itineraries for you. Have fun! P.S. you may also look into a cruise one way only, lots of info on that too.
went on one 2 years ago i think...they said they had a blast and have intentions on doing it again...i'm not sure which cruise line they used but i will find out...the had stops in the Bahamas...and they said the views are breathtaking....as soon as i find out which cruise line they used i will let you know....money well spent they said
I see the cruise ships go by all summer long and I have never been on a cruise to Alaska. I have taken a frieghter to Stewart BC which is on the Alaskan panhandle and it was a lot of fun. We stopped in all the little villages along the way and unloaded frieght. It took 5 days and no luxury but very senic I am sue a cruise would be great. I know the days are the longest but the weather will be warmer in lateJuly.
