I watched a few episodes -- had to give the guy a chance -- but I just don't like it. The concept is interesting, but I can't take that much Ambrose all at one time.
His taste is dubious (at least I think so), but he's very charming and very watchable. I also like the fact that he's not going in and renovating an entire room every week. It's a fun show,
I think what was sort of going on with the drapery was he got an attitude adjustment from 'well I'm the decorator so I will do what I like' to 'do what the customer wants and don't be so cocky'. Getting that kind of humility check is what makes the show work for me I think. I am so tired of some of the arrogance you see on some shows, this is a nice change.
I tried watching it 'the drapery show'...sorry girls can't say I could stand to watch it.
I'm enjoying it too. There is no comparison between Justin and Colin's show and this one, for me anyway. I just find Ambrose a lot more genuine. I loved it when he was talking with Preston Bailey and then gushed afterwards, exactly what I would have done.
I missed last weeks cake episode, the audio part anyway. He made a cake with black icing? Kind of unique. I really wish they had reruns of the shows like they do the other crappier ones.
I was a little put off by the drapery episode, the drapes were lovely but he didn't care about the homeowners and even though he thought the purple would look great the homeowners expressed they did not like purple but they got them anyway.
Yes he did a pretty good job.. even if he did nearly lose an eye (that cracked me up because I have lost count of the times my measuring tape has attacked me).
I'm liking the show now too. He did a pretty good job staging, I think he was proud of himself.
Okay kids, he's had a few shows under his belt, what do you think?
Personally I am loving his show. They really found a great way to relay a lot of info i think and I'm finding Ambrose to be a really likable host.
LMAO!!! I didn't get a chance to see it, and am not sure I could get through a full episode....but if I happen to turn on the TV next Monday, and he's on, I'll check out a little bit of it. And who knows...maybe I'll even laugh.
;) Mel
i really liked the format of the show, it was great to see actuall projects been done. As for Ambrose, i really got a hoot out of him, he was fun and funny to watch.

I wonder if Mel76 got a chance to catch him or if she is still in the bathroom wretching over his accent  I never did hear him say "dem" "dere" or "dat" and I was listening very carefully.
I hope they repeat it again because there was a few things I'd like to see again not the least of which is some of the subtleties of his humour I may have missed. I don't see it on the schedule other than last night (so it's catch it on Monday or no second or third chance for now I guess).
What I'm impressed with is in 30 minutes he showed some very good 'here's what you need to know about this, here's were you find out about it if you want to learn, here's what to look for in a well done job, here's how much time and effort it takes' and while you are having a good chuckle at his adventure you learn to make a stool, make a headboard, cover a chair from the webbing up. Nice way to present a lot of info in an anything but dry manner. I think what appealed to me the most was how he kept getting into trouble or bored with doing something which most of us who have tried new things end up have happening to us too. A nice human element spiced up with some double entendres.
I can't wait to see what else he tackles now and it's so nice to feel like there is a new show to look forward to again.
FYI they have a list of the shows up on HGTV.ca. Looks like he'll be showing some things of interest from how to pick a window covering and colour scheme to what it takes to decorate a cake and design/build a piece of furniture.
I liked the fact that he wasn't making over someone's house but trying to learn a skill. He was quite engaging as a host!
I watched the show too, I must say it was a good show. I was laughing a few times too.:)
I howled when he said the word "France".:biglol:
I think he's refreshing as he obviously doesn't take himself so seriously. I wonder how much is scripted and how much is really him?
I thought it was funny him driving a mini van of all things.
I agree. I just finished watching it and loved it. I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised and think it's one fresh show for a change. I think he/they have found a great way to show people how something is done. I thought it was really well done and Ambrose has exactly the right personality to pull offthis type of show. It's not often I can say I have had a good laugh while watching an HGTV show lately but I had a couple with this show.
I REALLY, REALLY loved this show. Ambrose is adorable and entertaining. A cross between Pee Wee Herman, the bad kid that sat at the back of the class and Ed Grimley. And we learn something too! This is probably my favourite HGTV show right now.
You took the words right out of my mouth. Most Newfies I have met in person are charming people, regardless of how they speak. It's ironic but if you were to say that about Quebecers they'd probably club you like a baby seal
I don't warch Colin and Justin either. I don't want to waste what little time I spend in front of the TV on a show that is just silly. The flower is to much for me. I like to watch where I feel I can learn something. That's why I watch things like Peter Fallico and SR I have taken to the new Steven And Chris Show and Relocation Relocation. I like the real estate buying ideas on remodel they always are talking about.
I'll probably try to make it through an episode -- but I suspect I'll have to switch the channel before it's over!!
His show is on Monday night. Is anyone going to be watching the show?
I think Ambrose should be a hoot. As mentioned, cclin & justin are OTT. Chris Hindman is also from Newfoundland and way OTT. I'm open
I can 't remember what the guy from Calgary name is, but since he was on the show he's been doing fairly well here it seems. he gets booked for the home shows and gets some press for various things now.
Maybe this is like American Idol where they say the folks who come in third or worse actually do better because they are free agents after all the exposure (vs the winners who are under contract to the producers of the show for 50% of everything they make and subject to whatever they deem good for their careers).
The first winner had that kitchen show -- which I think only had about 6 or 8 episodes and then it disappeared. And I remember reading that Karen Sealy decided to continue to pursue her design business instead of doing a show. But what happened to the other DSC and HSC winners??
As for the losers -- one guy was on Style Dept. (can't remember his name), Ulya is on Peter Fallico's flip show, Andrew Pike was on Rooms That Rock and Designer Guys, now Ambrose has his own show.... any others you can think of??
So I guess you're better off losing DSC than winning!! Hmmm... wonder what it means when your video doesn't even make the cut :o
Gee do people really think Newfies are stupid because they say 'dem' ,'dere', 'dat'?To me it's just part of an accent, not a sign of stupidity... see j.Chretien as he also says those words if you need an example (well maybe a bad example, but you get the idea). I get kind of bored with the generic broadcasting accent (no accent).
As for Ambrose...seems to me they are giving him a show simply because he has a bit of personality. He sure showed he didn't really know much about decorating but he was a character, like him or not. Maybe he's the only one who would go for it or they have someone guiding what he'll be showing.
What I don't understand is they have run about 3 years each of the designer superstar and best handyman with the prize supposedly being a show for the winners, and none of the winners have had a show yet. How does this happen?
are an acquired taste. Not my taste, but obviously lots of people like them.
Colin & Justin are funny and goofy :) Ambrose is grating
Have you seen all the various Colin & Justin shows? Those guys have made more shows than I can count over the years, and one of them wears a huge bouquet on his chest. I will probably watch Ambrose at least once, whereas I really can't watch Colin & Justin anymore.
I for 1 couldn't stand him you are right Mel he sounded like one of the comedy shows with the fake accent. What is wrong with TV that he gets his own show.
Seriously, I am MORTIFIED that this guy is from Newfoundland!!! These are the ones that give us the label "Stupid Newfies". And, I know we've talked about this before, but seeing this thread...just ENRAGES me!!! Its one thing to speak with an accent...but this man BUTCHERS the english language. Of course, maybe I'm the exception here? I often get people ask me if I'm from Newfoundland and I'll be like "How'd you know?" (thinking I speak very properly for a Newf..lol) and they'll reply "There was just one word that gave you away". So, apparently I also have a bit of an accent..which there's nothing wrong with. Its when people start saying "Dem" "Dere" "Dat" etc etc etc on NATIONAL TELEVISION that makes me wanna hurl!! Geez, I hope someone taught him some English 101...otherwise us Newfies will look like idiots once again. No biggie tho, I'm pretty sure people will get sick of watching really quickly, and he'll be cancelled.
 Mel
