Antiquing a dresser

Barbara's picture

I would like to repaint a dresser which is painted navy blue and has been used in my son's room. I would now like to use it in my baby daughter's room and would like it to have an off white/creamy antique look. I am not sure where to start. Is is possible to paint over the blue with primer? I would like some suggestions with colours and also the steps I should take to achieve the look. Thanks

Hi Barbara,

You can paint anything ! :-)

Depending on what the last coat was painted with, (oil or latex) you can definitely prime (you shouldn't paint oil over latex) and repaint. If it were me, because of the dark colour under it, I would give it two coats of primer, then paint with a good quality paint in the colour of your choice - you might even want to update knobs with some aluminum or pewter finished knobs :-)

Barbara,

I antiqued a couple of old caned chairs that my sister was ready to throw away. They came out beautifully. I got the instructions and materials from a Colour Your World store. They had brochures and instructions for many different faux finishes. Unfortunately, I did this last year. I don't exactly recall the steps. Do you have a Colour Your World in your area?
