I'd like to make a signature drink for a Labour Day party that I'm hosting. I'd like the finished drink to look like a sunset.......ie. part blue, part orange. I've seen drinks with 2 colours..... what liquors could I use to get 1 to float on top of the other? I was thinking about using orange juice/vodka for the "sun". Hope this makes sense?? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Drinks layer according to how much sugar (or how heavy) the ingredients are in relation to each other so play around. Also know all ingredients in a drink will separate and layer themselves if they are left to sit (which is why they give you stir sticks with drinks because with most, you don't want that to happen). Stuff like Grenadine will always go to the bottom as it's soooo sweet and then the rest will adjust themselves from there. The real trick is making sure your ingredients are different from each other in weight or the ones that aren't might mix.
Here's a site that seems to have oodles of layered drink recipes and links http://www.miss-charming.com/recipes/layerd.htm
i found a great demo for you (although the name is Tequila Sunrise not a sunset as you wanted :D):

if you substitute tequila with dry vermouth (2 tb sp)+Cointreau (1 tb sp) + gin (1/4 cup) then the name of the drink will be changed to Luigi.
if you want to use blue colour at the bottom, then you can substitute Grenadine with blue coloured syrup.
probably you can use vodka instead of tequila.
good luck with your signature drink! :)
p.s. this drink looks much better in the cone shaped glass.
I spent a number of years in the resto-bar business while I was in university but if memory serves me right we mainly did shooters that had the layer effect and of course that had a lot to do with the density of the liquor being used. Brings to mind the old B52's.... won't go there!
Anyway....I do recall that there was a drink that went like this and was called a sunset or something or other.
I found this recipe and it seems to be the one that I remember.
Hmmmm......maybe I should try this out for you today, heading down to the lake....;) to enjoy the sun and some water sports! :D
2 oz amaretto almond liqueur
3 oz orange juice
3 oz club soda
1 dash grenadine syrup
Fill a tall glass with crushed ice. Pour the amaretto over the ice then slowly add the orange juice and top with club soda to form layers. Add a dash of grenadine and garnish with a cherry and orange slice.
I am not sure how it would taste but if you made the orange vodka then added blue curacau (sp) it is what they add to make a blue Hawaii and has an orange flavour and then floated grenadine on top or cherry brandy.
