We moved into a house with a yard that is a typical lot size in a subdivision. There is a nice cedar shed in one corner which we want to keep and a square flagstone patio that unfortunatley was poorly installed and needs attention. That's it. The rest is grass, sort of a clean slate (dog chewed up the shrubs that the last owner planted). I'm trying to convince my DH to remove the flagstone that is there and it can be reused at our cottage. I am also trying to convince him to install a deck , actually most of the yard would be deck with only about an 8 footx20 foot run of grass . We live across from a park so the kids run around there on the equipment and the dog uses the park as well. Plantings would have to be hardy perenials for now until the puppy (love him to death) learns not to eat them. I'd like to use river rock beds and larger rocks, ornamental grasses, hardy hostas and a feature speciman tree maybe a Jap Maple or Dogwood? I was on the BHG website and designed an idea of what I'm after. I'd love some feedback good and bad and any suggestions, improvements at all would be appreciated. TIA.

thanks for the puppy proofing tips..i'll keep that in mind when selecting plantings. he is a rascal..but we love him.
I would just suggest that while your darling puppy is eating plants to be careful what you plant. Some plants can make the dog very sick with the toxins in them. Maybe plants veggies or herbs until he gets past the chewing stage LOL :)
i agree, i can't wait to get my hands dirty..this winter has been relentless!
good luck with all your plans and i too look forward to seeing your progress pics and final results.
happy digging!
ps. sorry for the tiny plan pic.. i know it's hard to read in that size
Your backyard sounds wonderful. I really wish I could see those plans better. I am going to be going through an extensive landscape project myself and see similarities in what we are after. We started with a blank slate as well. We finished our hardscape last fall and will be finalizing our softscape plans in the next 2 weeks, then we just wait for dig weather :) i will look forward to your post and your progress
