Bark

I've always used cedar mulch in my landscaping, but it always blows away. I want to start using bark, but I've heard it attracts carpenter ants. Is this true? I don't want carpenters unless they come with a hammer and nails!!!!

you are allowed to be cheap, too. You're welcome for the advice - just remember, free advice is worth what you paid for it! ;-))

and that may be one time. Yes, too thin may be it. My neighbour (who bought dyed red cedar mulch - don't particularly care for it, me) only put on a very thin layer too, over landscape fabric, and within a year it is practically all blown away, and the lovely landscape fabric is exposed. And his bed of perennials is definitely not damp, which is, after all the purpose of the mulch! Well, if you did want to save money, Elise, I suppose I would let you use about 2 inches, but definitely not less than that!! Get out that change purse, Deary, it isn't that expensive! And, just think, if it doesn't blow away then you don't have to replace it all next year ;-))

Silly, it is just me trying to blow your house down.
Perhaps if they come in overalls, tan and muscular it wouldn't be so bad?

when you say your cedar mulch blows away? I've used shredded cedar or pine bark for years and it works fine and stays put just fine too. In fact, in spring I have to rake it to get it to loosen up enough to let the earth underneath breath. How much do you put on? I put about 3 inches at the very least. When you say "bark" do you mean the big chinks? because it will not retain moisture as well, if that's what you want.
