Being a prairie girl myself I have never heard of these -are they made from Barley? What do they taste like?
I found a site www.eastcoastcatalogue.com. They sell many things that are known to be from eastern canada, including Barley Toys!! they are $5.50 for a bag.. I want to get them!!
but maybe helpful for next year... could the barley candy you are talking about be from Robertson's Candy? They are a company based in Truro, NS, I don't know any more than that, except that I grew up with the same candy. They also make ribbon candy, which can be a beautiful centerpiece all on it's own!
Wow, your guys have brought back memories of my grandmother in Nova Scotia sending us barley sugar candy when we were kids.
I purchased some in Ontario years ago, but it was not the same thing at all.
Guess it is just an east coast thing.
I hope it stays that way, it makes it kind of special.
Guess you'll have to find a treat that is special to the west.
Merry Christmas!
I've been looking for the same thing. I remember getting them in shapes of roosters, in particular. I used to live in New Brunswick, now I'm in Ontario. The ones I find here are just not the same, completely different flavour.
