Typically the counter top will be at the same elevation as the cooktop on your stove, and typically that's about 36 inches above the floor. However, that's based on what the manufacturers think is most comfortable for the height of most people.
For some things it's important to have a standard that everyone conforms to and for other things there's no good reason to conform to any standard, and counter top height falls into the latter category. It's common for people that suffer from dwarfism to have custom cabinets made to suit their height, and those people do perfectly well with the counter tops much lower. That is, it's more important to have the counter tops at a height that's suitable to YOU, rather than have them at any arbitrary "standard" height.
I think 40" are standard....
Hi! Ours are 36 inches high. I have a friend who had her bottom cabinets made 38 inches high. I think the 36" is standard.
