Designig /Shaping front yard gardens

Hello

Can anyone give us suggestions or advice on how to find the best shape or design for our front yard gardens. We do have gardens there now, but from the road they don't look balanced . The house next door is far bigger than ours and their garage seems to tower over the front of our house. Any suggestions on how we can do this ourselves? thanks Pattib

I would suggest a drive through the neighbourhood or other nearby subdivisions to find other houses with similar front yards, and see if you find one with garden beds that you like the looks of. Note the shape of the garden beds, and the type of plants, shrubs and trees that make it work.

As for balance, maybe you need to place something to draw the eye to the side of the yard opposite the neighbour's home, which may really anchor the big picture when you view your home from the curb. My home, for example, has a lot going on on the left hand side when viewed from the curb. The far left has a 2' border garden that runs the entire depth of the front yard. Next to that is my left-justified driveway, which starts out straight from the curb, but curves to the right. This makes the lawn a 'quarter of a circle', if you know what I mean. There are 2 kidney or teardrop shaped garden beds along the curved line between the grass and the driveway-a small one near the curb, and a large one in front of the house. Anyway, we have a very large ornamental cherry blossom tree near the curb on the right hand side of the lawn, which anchors the whole thing.

I hope this helps.
