Does a gas fireplace *need* a mantel shelf? Saftey?

Hi All,

I'm thinking of pulling down the mantel that surrounds my gas fireplace, and replacing it with a simple, sleek tile surround - no shelf above it. An example I found online in the picture ...

Does anyone know if this introduces any safety issues?

The work is still in progress, waiting on hardware to mount my TV, but here is the progress so far...

Before with mantel, after with new tile & serious drywall repairs in progress.

Thanks all!!

I'm thinking of going with oblong/rectangular tiles in a stone, maybe with a bit of a sheen rather than a completely matte finish. Above the fireplace, I'm going to hang an LCD TV.

Big plans ... hopefully I'll get it all done sooner rather than later! I'll post before & after pictures as soon as I have an "after". :)

The mantel is purely decorative. or not depending on what is put on it :D
I like your inspiration photo.

As far as I know, it shouldn't be an issue. I've seen this look before - it's lends itself to a contemporary/modern decor in my opinion. It's a very clean look... it'll all be about the art you put above the fireplace.
