Hi! Country Bumpkin here!
I'm planning on getting my 180' by 20' driveway asphalted this spring, and haven't got a clue how much it should cost. I'm worried that with the Home Reno Tax break might be getting contractors too excited, and will be over-charging, especially young first time home owners. I'm trying to avoid a potential rip-off. So, I'm trying to get an estimated benchmark cost.
Can anyone please help me figure out what a reasonable rate should be?
Or please let me know how much you've paid for asphalting your driveway?
thanks :o)

I had no idea asphalt was so expensive! At that rate, I wonder how it would compare to do interlocking stones, if you were willing to do it yourself? We've only done a walkway in interlocking, but it wasn't difficult -- just hard work.
I'm from Ontario I imagine pricing might be close to saskatchewans not sure...but I do know liquid AC is dramaticly high...
I live in Saskatchewan. Several years ago, we were quoted approx. 2000.00 to do our 1200 square foot driveway area in asphalt. The same area to be done in concrete was 3600.00. Now this was a long time ago, unfortunately, my hubby lost his job and we have left it undone. I know construction costs have risen terribly, so I do not know what the current rates are.

Hello,
Do u live in Ontario, if so depending on the area I can recommend some trustworthy companies...I would at least get between 3 -5 estimates.. Also depends what ur plans are for staying where u are....If you are planning on staying there for many, many years then I would make sure your prep is done right, make sure the A Gravel is packed down good, I would get a base put then wait 5 years and get them to come back and put a top coat on it.... that way the first 5 years your driveway will have chance to settle and sink then when 5 years comes up u get a nice top coat layed and presto beautiful driveway...Also do remember asphalt has got more expensive because of the liquid AC and another fyi don't wait till mid summer or late summer I'd do it early summer....Asphalt companies are soooo busy come summer as they need to fulfill their contract comittments and the little guys get asked for help by the big guys and liquid AC sky rockets by then...P.S. If u like concrete driveways I would get a couple quotes by them as well believe me once Liquid AC sky rockets asphalt gets quite expensive.
Good Luck ....
Hi we need to look into doing our driveway too. Some good friends of ours did thier driveway last summer and they paid &3000. for an average 2 car driveway. they said that was a good deal. They were saying something about making sure you get asphalt ( 4' after its packed down) I gues alot of these pavers only put down 2' and then pack it down
This should an interesting topic. There are a lot of variables as the other poster has mentioned and you do have a very long driveway. I have heard a rule of thumb price of $2.50 per square foot, but to be honest I'm not sure if that is correct.
Your best bet is to get competing quotes from companies that are known and then figure out who is the best one. Good luck and maybe others will add some comments, but please keep this going as we need to do our driveway too eventually.
