I have a 100+ yr old home with natural, unpainted shingles.
We would like to paint our trim, spindles, shutters and doors but are having a hard time choosing colours.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

OH nice house! (I can't figure out how I missed this post all this time...) If you haven't been introduced yet, go check out [url]http://www.oldhouseweb.com/forums/[/url] as the place is full of old house lovers who have all sorts of sources for pictures and ideas and experience. The main site for the forum has a lot of info and there is also a section for reference sites and material they have found helpful. You will probably find you should be thinking of at least 3 or more colours on a house like that whether you leave the shingles or not.
There are also a few sites out there like this one [url]http://www.historichousecolors.com/precivwar.html[/url] where you can see pictures of various houses and colour combinations. Also sites like [url]http://www.arts-crafts.com/archive/achomes/color-schemes.shtml[/url] where you can see period perfect ideas, combinations, pictures. Also, here's one full of pictures by a guy who just loves old houses. some are pretty wild, some not so much [url]http://www.pbase.com/andyshots/heritagehill[/url] If you like the look of the houses in places like San Francisco, google images using 'painted ladies of San Francisco' or something similar as that is what those houses are commonly called.
You have to look around sites like this to see all the ideas but the best site ever for old houses is that forum I mentioned first.
I LOVE your house. Tell me its on the water and I'll faint right now. Beautiful. Can the shingles be restored? If not, I would consider painting the shingles. The sky is the limit there but I've included a pic of one that was done in black. Stunning. Would you consider a different screen door?
