Fireplace

Has anyone here ever extended the height of their fireplace? We have a pretty traditional fireplace and I've been humming and hawing about resurfacing it (currently beige brick) with ceramic tile, but now I've decided to just add a surround using a moulding kit. BUT, now I'm thinking it might be nice to take it to the ceiling....

Has anyone ever attempted this on their own?

I emailed the website for the DG months ago (as in about 10 months ago). Never heard back from them, either.

I really hope I can get some help here. In the Designer Guys (sigh) book, there's a fireplace on page 57 (Gentleman's Quarters). I definitely want something like this for my livingroom. I've e-mailed the DG's website to ask if they provide designer names but have had no response. Can anyone help me find out who designed and built this fireplace for Bernie? Because now it's pretty much become an obsession.
Thanks!

Still haven't seen Devine Design. I just missed it last night! Going to buy a second satelite receiver when we go down to the city next week.

Funny you should say that, northern girl, because my rationale is that two satellite receivers make for a happy marriage! It's well worth the investment. ;)

I'll be sure to check it out. I know what my husband will say... Not another design show!... guess we better invest in another satelite receiver.

Divine Design is one of my absolute favourites. Candice is a true talent - probably the best I've ever seen. Here's a link to the website.

I watch it on WTN (Women's Television Network), Channel 567 on Star Choice, on Saturday's at noon. It's re-broadcast several times over the course of a week. I'm a huge fan of Candice's work.

Happy viewing, glad you like this forum. It's always lively! ;)

I haven't seen this show, Devine Design, before. What network is it on and what day in Ontario?

I've watched H&H for years but never checked out the website. We can only get dial-up up here... very slow. These forums are great. This could be a dangerous new habit!

I emailed Divine Design to ask them if the mantel and surround was built from scratch or a kit but I've not heard back from them yet. I'll keep you posted for sure.

I loved the design of that room, too. It was gorgeous! Candace Olsen is one of the most talented designers on tv (if not the most talented!)

And thanks for the compliment. I'm a designer in training so I always welcome hearing when I'm off my rocker! LOL haha

I love reading everyone's suggestions on this board.

Smartypants, thanks again for the heads up on that episode. I just finished watching. It's pretty much what I want to do. I am going to email their site to find out what product they used (to see if it was a kit). I loved the shape of the mantel!

Good morning, Dekota_Skye ~

Candice Olsen just dealt with your exact problem on her last episode. Check in to the re-broadcast of her show today (Sunday). The re-vamping of her clients' fireplace was very inspiring.

Happy viewing,
;)

They extend/change the fireplaces all the time on Trading Spaces so it might be worth while for you to check out thier before and after pictures (tlc.discovery.com/fansites/tradingspaces/beforeandafter/beforeandafter.html)

I have seen it done with simple finished plywood and moldings to make it look like the matel goes all the way up, to frame a picture or mirror etc. What style are your looking at doing?
