Where to start! My husband and I are building a new home for our young family and I am doing my best to try to add some great features while maintaining a reasonable (husband approved) budget. At the moment, we are getting a fireplace installed into a recessed nook. I realize this seems odd as firepalces tend to stick out and not be set back, but we had to work with the existing layout. The fireplace nook is 6 feet wide and 1 foot deep (the room is 14 by 12...tiny). My problem is that we would like built-ins surrounding it. I am not certain that there will be room, and if not, how I should go about finishing the fireplace in the nook? Should we create a mantel that fills the entire nook if there is insufficient space for the built-ins? We are decorating our home in a traditional/transitional manner. To recap, the dimensions of the fireplace are H - 33 & W - 34 1/4. The nook itself is 6 inches wide. Thanks for any advice you can offer!
