A few years ago we used to be able to get this green disk (about 3" dia) you put in the crisper and it kept the veggies fresher for what seemed like forever. I don't know what happened to them except the grocery store I found them at stopped carrying them. If you see anything like that, they were great. They had something in them that stopped the fumes that apparently cause the veggies to go icky so fast.
Meanwhile, they also came with instructions about storing and how certain veggis should not be with others. I am afraid I can't remember which things went with which but there might be some info on the web somewhere. Also you were told to keep an eye out for any soft bits (like lettuce gets) as once it appeared on one veggie it would quickly start the others going off (the fume thing I guess). So the message was to get that kind of thing off the veggie and out of the fridge as soon as seen and to never put fresh veggies with ones that were on their way out.
Do you store the celery in the plastic bag? I do, as it seems the fridge kind of dries it out. If the celery is just a few days in the fridge and has lost its crispness, a brief soak in ice water can bring it back.
We're very lucky for a great produce place close to home. I could walk there in 10-15 minutes if I wanted to, but I usually drive and load up the trunk. One day I have to try the walk though, as I have one of those shopping things on wheels that would be handy.
I went 4 times today. The green grocers & the bakers. Came home decided I wanted to make dessert so went to SS, picked up more veggies, and when they didn't have whip cream I had to go to SOF. Who ever walks out of the store with just the one thing they went for?
My Kenmore all-fridge seems to keep veggies much longer than my old Whirlpool did. Actually to make veggies like lettuce last, I wash & wrap in a white cotton dish towel. If the lettuce is the bagged kind that says you don't have to wash, I still do. I do enough in the spinner for two meals and then wrap the part for the second meal in the white cotton towel. Doesn't have to be a a towel. I just prefer cotton to paper towels - thye're too processed.
I try to buy just enough of a veggie to last two meals. I buy the broccoli & cauliflower heads, etc, in bulk so I can pick what I want.
I have to admit I live in walking distance to grocery stores so I just look at it as my daily excercise. It's my excuse for not going to the gym on those days.
At least at the end of today, for all my trips, DH got a nice dinner & soon I will whip up the cream for the Key Lime pie.
