Attached are pictures of my front closet... we just took the old ugly doors out today and are looking at getting new sliding doors really really soon.... But first we want to organize the inside and maximize storage space.
My idea was to build horizontal shelves all the way up the closet to be able to store all of our shoes ... to do this we would move the rod a bit more towards the front of the closet to allow for the extra space ... we'd have to move jackets to the side to access some of the shoes but the goal is to not overstuff the closet with jackets... does someone have a picture of a closet like this or any other front hallway closet that maximizes all of its space?
Please help!

Hi! This helped me a lot when I was organizing our entryway. Hope it helps you too.

We have a closet under our stairs and this is what we did with ours. Using the Ikea Pax shoe system, he built three drawers for shoes. The middle drawer he actually cut down the stems of the shoe holders since my shoes are only size 8 and did not need them to be so tall. By doing this, it allowed the whole unit to be a bit shorter so we could tuck it further under the stairs leaving more room for coats along the side. One of these pictures is a piece of wood that I crackled and then we screwed 3 old fashion hooks into it for a place to hang our coats. We have another coat storage in the basement so as the seasons change, we can take down the winter coats and bring up the lighter jackets. There is 3 hooks on each side of the door.
I feel your pain! I have a small triangular closet in my entranceway. Horizontal shelving going full-height up one side makes sense, shortening the bar a bit but maximizing storage. Then shelves/baskets along the bottom and top? Here's a good photo: http://houseandhome.com/design/clean-organized-mudroom
