We have a basement rec room that measures 15' x 25' with full height ceilings. It's fully finished in terms of drywall, electrical and carpeting. Our fireplace is not working, but I'd like to get a gas insert and vent it so it's not so cold down there in the winter. What's really missing is the organization/division of space. This room needs to function in several important ways:1) Home office: my husband put a full wall of Ikea shelves and cupboards in, but they are virtually full already and we still require some storage for filing, etc. We have two desks; one for him and one for me, but I'm not really sure where they should go (against the wall?) and what kind of lighting they should have.2) Home theatre: my husband installed an overhead projector in the middle of the room, pointed towards the fireplace with a pull-down screen. We have some old over-sized furniture down there, but I feel it doesn't provide optimal seating, nor does it "mesh" well with the home office area--I don't know how to separate these spaces and still make them cohesive.3) Kids' playroom: at the opposite end of the room from the home office is a wall that has chalkboard paint on it (rarely used), some low tables and lots of toys in baskets or otherwise that don't have a proper place in the room. I want my kids to go down there--which they don't unless accompanied--and feel as though they too have a space of their own. I don't know how to make this work with the home theatre and home office.4) Doing it all on a budget: I think most of the elements are there, but I have no idea what to budget to make this space "work." Any suggestions on how to accomplish what I want to would be greatly appreciated!
