Hi Dianne, if you are in GTA, you can check this store as well, it has everything and anything:

There is also a Cajun restaurant that sells traditional spices and sauces from Louisiana, and they could have sassafras or gumbo mix.

I like to make seafood for our Christmas eve dinner. When I saw this recipe I thought it might be a nice change from the regular recipes & I can make it ahead. I'm glad you sent the links for online spice shopping because I have no idea where to beging to look for this spice.
I haven't used it either, but it seems that it is a necessity when making Gumbo. I found this online.....http://www.thespicehouse.com/spices/gumbo-file-powder-powdered-sassafras-leaves in case you are not able to get the spice locally.
Let us know how the recipe turns out!!
Never heard of it -- good thing we have Google!! If you can't find it, you can order it online:

No I haven't, it's very expensive. It's made from crocus pollen or something. Never mind, I'm thinking saffron.
I found out that file powder is sassafras powder. Has anyone cooked with this before?
