Kitchen Cupboard Cunundrum

My beautiful new kitchen is missing some “je ne sais quoi?”.  How did I arrive at this design dilemma? Haven’t I watched enough design shows? Torn out countless pictures from House and Home?  Clearly, there is a need for talented designers to help guide us home decor lovers towards the look we ultimately want but can’t figure out how to achieve on our own.  My husband and I built a new home as we have 2 young boys and needed more space.  Picking out colours and such was fun at the time but as I reflect back I think we may not have thought things through in some areas. Since we spent that year dealing with a newborn, a toddler, planning our spring wedding, selling a house and building a new house, we are afraid to make any more design decisions for our kitchen without the help of an expert.  The initial issue we faced was that the cream cabinets we originally picked out had undergone a colour change through the manufacturer and now had quite a yellow tint to them which we didn’t like.  The latte was our next favourite choice. Now as I stare at our wall of cabinets in the kitchen, all I see is too much latte!  It doesn’t let the hood fan stand out as much as we hoped.  The second issue with the cabinets is the height. We paid extra to have them go all the way to the top. Alas, our ceilings are higher than what “all the way to the top” means to the cabinet company.  Now we have a 9” filler between the top of the cabinets and the bottom of the crown moulding that looks odd.  As for lighting? No idea.... And paint colour for the wall? We have no idea what would work best.  Our kitchen opens into the family room and I would love some kind of soothing green but am not sure if that would be best given the kitchen cupboard colour.  Lastly, the backsplash choices we were given were pretty boring and I can’t wait to rip them down and put up something with  more style. My husband and I have done a full kitchen reno in our old home and love rolling up our sleeves and getting our hands dirty. There’s nothing like a before and after picture to make all the hard work seem worthwhile. Please help a couple of happy but exhausted parents find that “je ne sais quoi?” that’s missing.Hope to hear from you,
