This one is most comfortable gadget I ever used. But with that you should also see your basic requirements and family members as well.
Just try to get their honest views as well ... in this regard as well.
I still like the attachment though because I can't see myself ever buying a full blown stand alone ice cream maker.
The reason the dasher isn't "fixed" is so that when the ice cream becomes quite thick, the motor doesn't burn out trying to turn it. Once the dasher starts slipping like you described, your ice cream is ready. The ice cream may seem soft, but leaving it a half hour or so in the freezer will make it scoopable.

I don't have a Costco one but I have had the one for 2 years and never had a problem. I use mine at least one a week to make several loaves of bread so it gets a work out.
I have this and while I like it I find one thing wrong with it. The dasher sometimes becomes disconnected from the drive motor (it's not actually screwed in there just kinda sitting there with teeth for tension) and then it goes thud thud thud and you have to go fix it. If it happens mid-mix you're stuck there trying to get it moving again as the ice cream is half frozen and sticks.

Yea I have to agree that this would be TOO much of a temptation for me to come off my diet. My weight watchers group would KILL me! lol :)
The rotating dasher and insulated freezer bowl attach to your mixer, whipping up two quarts of your favorite frozen dessert in just 20–30 minutes. Mixing action blends ice cream to a velvety-smooth consistency, while a specially formulated liquid inside the double-walled bowl ensures uniform freezing. For homemade ice cream at a moment’s notice, store the bowl in your freezer. The dasher, drive assembly and bowl adapter ring are dishwasher safe.
and you get a $20 TSC shopping card if you buy today so that would be almost enough to cover the shipping cost. Cool colours too.
I just finished looking at the TSC ....I love all my Kitchenaid small appliances....I did buy the ice cream attachment & really like it:)I made rum & raisin ice cream at Christmas MMMM...good:)
Just letting anyone out there that The Shopping Channel has a one day special purchase for a kitchen aid mixer.
Also comes with a bonus mixing bowl and a set of measuring utensils.
It's sale price is just under $300.
Might be a good deal.

Thank-You Kipper ...your info will definately help me to decide....the only thing that scares me is the amount of ice cream I will be tempted to eat...I LOVE ICE CREAM :D
I have one. I've used it many times. It works well, is reasonably easy to clean and works better than some of the other ice cream making machines/gadgets I've tried.
The ice cream will come out too soft to eat right then (or so I find anyway, unless you prefer it as Soft Ice Cream) but if you freeze it for a few hours after making it, it's hard enough to scoop. The reciepes that are in the instruction booklet taste great and work every time.
Making ice cream is somewhat tedious. Prep time is the killer. You have to pre-chill the ice cream maker 12 hours (not a problem if you simply store it in the freezer anyway). The batters have to be cooked and chilled at least 8 hours ahead of churning. That said, the end product is delicious. The freezing bucket is large and yeilds enough ice cream to make it worth while making it.
All the parts (dasher, freezing bucket) have to be hand washed, and the high fat content of ingredients used makes it a little trickier to get it squeaky clean. The design is much more hygenic though than the soft ice cream maker I have, which takes almost as long in clean up as total prep time.
While I don't use my KitchenAid Ice Cream maker often, I would definitely buy one again if something ever happened to it.
Hope this helps,
