A lesson in pet med costs

As you'll recall Ebony got into some poison last week (and so far so good I am happy to say). Anyway, I had heard getting meds from pharmacies was cheaper but now I know how much that can be so I thought I'd pass it along.

Eb has to take Vitamin K for a few weeks and the emerg only had enough for 1 week and called a pharmacy for another 2 weeks worth. Well I paid the vet $40 for the first week and was told that is what the pharmacy would cost too but the pharmacy said 'no, $44 for 2 weeks worth'. That's quite a difference being almost half the cost so I think it's worthwhile asking a vet for a prescription vs having them hand out the drugs if they are charging that much of a mark up.

I know all vets don't do this (mine is usually pretty good as I compared his prices once before) but even this emerg which is pretty reasonable took a good cut and I know the wallet cleaner types would be even worse.

Thanks for the info, DBD. With a cat who is getting rather long in the tooth (pun intended :) ) we have had to get meds from time to time.
