Maple Leaf Recall

Jeep's picture

I have some Maple Leaf Bacon in the fridge and I see it is not on the recall list but I am afraid to eat it. I think it is going in the garbage. I was surprised to see how many different things are on the list. Here is a site with the list http://www.stcatharinesstandard.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1165103

I haven't purchased ANY deli meats. pre-packaged or otherwise since this whole thing started. That is...untill yesterday. Safeway had the most delicious looking black forest ham on sale and I was DYING for a ham and havarti wrap...so I took the plunge and bought/ate it! Let me tell ya....it was sooooooo yummy! But, now that I've had one..its back to the deli meat ban in our home. I'm certainly never going to serve it to my kids again. (or maybe just for a long time..) I've started cooking my own chicken breast, turkey and ham to make sandwiches....luckily, my kids prefer PB & J. LOL! A lot less work!

FYI,

Dunns Smoked Meat is not a Maple Leaf Foods product.

Pretty coincidental that the recall is for the same bacteria (maybe not same strain of listeriosis...I don't know)

So many recalls it seems these days! yikes...

ATTENTION

ALL COSTCO shoppers !!!

Seem that those DUNNS FAMOUS smoked meat packages may be tainted !

The 1K packages containing 6 packs have the UPC code :

4 00007 55699 7

best before date;

Nov 1 and 2

They have been tested and contaminated with listeria monocytogenes that may not look or smell spoiled.

don't package food in non recyclable plastic bags / containers if you expect me to buy it.

Their answer to the green shift is to put salad in plastic!

So I hope the GREEN legislation correctly identifies this corporation as a food AND plastic producer (that can't be trusted).

Arob,

Just curious...my husband works at Maple Leaf and I'm not sure what you're referring to when you mention their answer is to put salad in plastic. I wasn't aware that ML even did salads. Which products are you referring to?

Two of the Maple Leaf meat slicers were found to have the listeria bacteria....the bacteria was found deep in the slicer ...the slicers were not taken completely apart turning each cleaning because it was not recommended by the manufacturer Formax....The machines will now be taken apart before each cleaning & sanitizing...I personally think if supervision & inspection is not present at all times all it takes is one person to be complacent & this can cause a major problem.

I totally agree with you Lisa. Even though we have been through the illness I would not hesitate to purchase Maple Leaf meats. Actually I would probably prefer it because they are proably the safest out there at this present time.

Hi-
I agree with this of course! If in doubt, you should throw it out or return to the store.

I was really speaking with regard to the other Maple Leaf products. (ie. bacon that was being discussed) Maple Leaf has 24 plants and the recall involved only those items that came from the Barter Rd facility '97B'. ML issued the recall to cover all product from this plant-above and beyond what they had to do from the lines in question. (CFIA requested a limited recall-ML went beyond that to include all)

The plant impacted by the recall does NOT produce Maple Leaf Bacon, Hot DOgs, Simply Fresh products, fresh Poultry (Ie Prime) or Pork products. This is what I was trying to communicate so my apologies for any confusion.

I had sent a note to Macsmom and was thrilled to hear that the illness has run its course and her son is ok and back to normal :)

FYI-I read a letter from an Assistant Newspaper Editor saying not to give in to the 'listeria hysteria'. (Moncton transcript Sept 5) Understanding that things can go wrong and not to take away from the deaths/illnesses and further saying he believes that if there is a way to make factory safer, in a country that is best in the world when it comes to protecting consumers, then it will be done. I could scan article...

I , for one, continue to have faith in Maple Leaf and fully believe that Mr McCain and his team will do whatever is possible to prevent this unfortunate incident from happening again. Like the Newspaper Editor, I'd be willing to place bets that the safest foods (Meats) will come off these very same production lines.

Another possible case here. Not 100% confirmed but autopsy is being performed.

We had one death with confirmed listeriosis last week.

Both cases are elderly people.

Pearl_girl's picture

I was listening to Dr. Elliot T. Ryser PHD being interviewed and he said is a relatively uncommon food-borne illness and the risk of an individual person developing Listeria infection after consumption of a contaminated product is very small. As has been said before people with low immunity, the elderly and pregrant women due to the hormone changes are more prone to have the bacteria affect them. He said that cheeses made with unpasturized milk such as
as feta, Brie, and Camembert, blue-veined cheeses, or Mexican-style cheeses were just as likely to be a sourse of the bacteria.
He wrote the book Listeria, Listeriosis, and Food Safety which is said to be "the book" on the disease,
This outbreak, according to him probably came from the meat slicers.
My heart goes out to all those employees who I am sure are sickened by this dreadful bacteria and the sickness it has caused.

Hi Macsmom-I sure hope your little one starts to feel better soon! I remember when I was hopitalized with food poisoning (about 10 yrs ago), I spent about 6 days vomitting feeling like I was never going to recover and then took a speedy turn for the better. Lots of liquids and antibiotics. Hopefully, your daughter will be fine too. Keep in mind that even if ingested, this bateria will not make everyone ill so my fingers are crossed for her!!

Hang in there and again my sincere best wishes for a quick recovery for your son!!

macsmom's picture

My son is just finishing up day four of his antibiotics and I'm not sure he is getting any better. Hopefully in a few more days. At this point I am not sure if he will be able to start school or not on Tuesday. I was trying to stay positive about this but this morning we received an e-mail from the summer camp that my daughter was at advising us that they have been told that they also served contaminated meat. She has been away for five days with some friends at an island cottage on Georgian Bay with no telephone etc. I am praying that she is fine. She comes home tomorrow night and I can;t wait.
Thanks again everyone for your kind thoughts.

I must say that when I saw Michael McCain on TV looking quite heartsick but taking responsibility for the Maple Leaf Foods disaster & apologizing to everyone he had to know that there would be lawsuits and he went ahead with his apology.

My heart does go out to all the affected families and respect given to McCain for his class act/manner at such difficult times for all as he took responsibility for something his company caused.

everyone for your positive thoughts. I am not freaking out over this as I know that we have caught it quickly and we are very fortunate because he is a young, strong and healthy boy. Although we know the source of the problem I do not think that laying blame on anyone will help. I am staying postive and helping my son get better. My heart goes out to Mr. McCain when I see him on the news. This is not something I would wish on anyone.

Lisa At Home's picture

Macsmom-I'm sorry to hear about your son too...I wish him well for a speedy recovery!!

I had severe food poisoning years ago and spent a week in hospital. Recovery did come with antibiotics. Stay strong!

This is a tragic situation either way you look at it. My heart goes out to the victims and those that have fallen ill , but also equally so to Mr Michael McCain and his team of 23,000+ at Maple Leaf. (My husband being one of them) I truly believe that ML has done whatever they can to prevent this kind of disaster from happening and they are trying their best to control this. This is heart-wrenching for all involved I'm sure.

Take care and wishing you well,
Lisa

Also sorry to hear your news. For one, he has a young healthy body and age on his side to fight the illness and obtain good recovery results.

Sending postive thoughts your way.

Oh my! Sorry to hear that macsmom. I hope that he is feeling better soon. It is scarey when you think of how easily something like this can happen. Sometimes when we think we have the flu--- well who knows? You have to feel for all of the families with their loved ones ill or passing away. I guess it could happen anywhere.

macsmom's picture

My son has been diagnosed with listeriosis. We could not figure out where he could have come into contact with it as we do not eat processed meat.
Today we received an e-mail from the summer camp he was at four weeks ago advising us that they have just discovered that they served some fo the meats that are on the recall list.
He has been sick with flu like symptoms. fever, stomach cramps, diarreha, sore neck etc. He is being treated with antibotics right now. He is usually very healthy so I am not to worried and glad that at least we know what it is and where it came from.

This is what DH is afraid of that you don't know which ones are good and which ones to stay away from as there are so many different names on them. It is just not Maple Leaf name they make so many under other names. No Deli products of any sort in this house until thing settle down.

dustbunnydiva's picture

This has really been a reminder too for not taking things too lightly. We really do assume things are always safe and I know my mom's generation never really did that. They say this bacteria can grow even when the food is in the fridge so I guess I'll be paying closer attention to those best before dates.

I noticed a sign up at Hortons the other day saying they do not use any of the Maple Leaf products so I guess the public is cutting down their consumption of any sandwiches etc. that might have cold cuts in them. I ordered chicken salad anyway...just to eat comfortably.

Oh boy, the morning news said they just added more things to the recall list. This time Kirkland (Costco) croissant and meat plates.

Here is a really sad case.

A lady lost her child to this illness years back.

She and her husband recently consumed some of the tainted meat and she instantly recognized the signs. Her husband is currently in the hospital getting treated for his serious ills.

I really feel for her (& others) !

How dreadfully sad for the persons who have died and their families. My heart goes out to them. We have no idea how far reaching this can be.

SamKing's picture

I heard that there have been about 30 deaths.

They include :

22 in Ontario, 2 in Quebec, 4 in BC one in the Prairies.

An additional 30 cases have been identified and curently being investigated.;

Well a patient at a near by hospital is now sick and DH has tossed everything Maple Leaf out and says he'll never trust their food again. I am not as freaked out as he is but that was just to close to home and he won't allow any of their product in the house. I only ever bought their bacon as I don't buy deli meats anyway but now no Maple Leaf bacon.

Jeep's picture
Jeep

Thanks guys that is really helpful info I feel so much better. I feel for them it must be awful being part of their group right now. I always buy their bacon and that is what scared me I'll check the marking on my things and reassure DH that his favourite bacon is ok.

DBD is correct. The easist code to look for is 97B.

'B' is the ML Plant on Barter Rd in Toronto where the recalled products were produced. You'll notice that items such as Bacon, Hot Dogs, Chicken etc do not have this same code...as I mentioned above, these are produced at other facilities.

Maple Leaf goes above & beyond when it comes to Food Safety and are taking the extra precautionary steps in light of this tragic situation.

you can also visit the Maple Leaf website at www.mapleleaf.ca for listing of recalled products.

They said on the news to check the best before date on any products (includes schnieders, overlander, shoppsies (?sp) and a few other names) and look for the factory number (which is right beside it). If it says 97B, do not eat it as it comes from the plant with the problem.
