Mira,
Sorry - I didn't mean to hijack your thread. Your headboard is stunning - congratulations!
Tristan,
Have a look at RL Turret Stair. I used it (in satin finish) to paint an old Ikea pine desk a dark chocolate brown. I also did a topcoat of Minwax Polycrylic (also in satin finish), and I think it helped to make it look a bit more like stain than a painted finish.
try mixing your stains together to achieve the colour you want. I've been quite successful using Dark Walnut and Ebony and Red Mahogany and Ebony.
You can also try thinning your paint down and applying it as you would a stain if you are trying to cover a wood grain.
Thanks Mira, will try looking at Paint instead of stain as no one in the marketplace seems to have anything that is an indoor, solid stain in dark brown that would work.
Will keep you posted. :)
bravo!!!...give yourself a huge pat on the back...it's beautiful...it is a bit tall for me...but i still think it's very nice ...i love the brown bedding and blue pillows...
I totaly agree it would be so boring if we all had the same house and the same taste, there would be no need for a forum like this. I love seeing other peoples homes and their taste.
OH and by the way, I am in LOVE with your headboard.
It would be too boring if we all had same taste. I love everything about my headboard........i would do another one if i had to in a snap...the bedding is something that is temporary ...its corduroy ...i have bought some fabric to make all new bedding ...including throw pillows...i will post the pics once its done
Mira, you did a wonderful job on that headboard, but it's a bit too large for my taste and I think there is too much contrast in colour :(
my trims were mdf as thats all i could afford and i had left over ralph lauren paint called Traditional which i used and sprayed a coat of varnish because the paint was in Flat sheen..i have previously used an oil-based dark walnut stain and it seem to do a good job..
Hi Mira
I am also doing a headboard similar to yours. The difficulty I am having is this. I currently have furniture in the house where the wood is a very dark chocolate brown, with little or no woodgrain showing. Very similar to the colour of the headboard shown in the Canadian House and Home magazine of Feb. 2006 (there is a Boutique Hotel Chic advertisement with a headboard in it.) I am unable to find any stain that will be dark enough AND cover the woodgrain. From your photo, you seem to have found something. What was it?? Help!
that headboard is stunning as is the whole room, im so jealous...can hardly wait to do our bedroom...very well done

excellent job on the headboard Mira! It looks very professional:)
Your headboard is lovely, you did a wonderful job! France is right, projects liek these are addictive:)
yes i m impressed with your diagram...how did you do that ....everything is right , there is also another trim that covers the sides and top so fabric can not be seen going around the 2x4. looks like you have got a good knowledge on how to make your headboard now....i'd love to see it as soon as its done
If you had a cut away of the profile of the headboard would this be what it looks like (in a very basic fashion of course)?
the 2x4 was screwed on with wood screws from the plywood side..about 3in long....2x4 sits right on the edge of plywood so if you were to look at the plywood staraight on you wouldnt see the 2 x 4...i forgot to mention he also had a piece of 2x4 in the center of the plywood...i guess for more even support ....i dont know if its necessary but he just like to make everything extra sturdy.....we are goin to be making another headboard pretty soon so i will pay extra attention in the construction area.
thanks for the info. Do you know how the 2x4's were attached to the plywood? You said they were on the perimeter and I'm thinking the plywood is thinner than the 2x4, so was one side flush with the front or back of the plywood or was the plywood centred? Did your husband use long screws or some other doodad to fix the 2x4 to the plywood?
That looks great. I might have to give it a try for my guest room.
our bed is queen size and the headboard is 5 x4 the legs are 2ft from ground so the total height is 6ft. the frame is around the perimeter of the plywood, the 1in foam is cut smaller leaving at least 1 inch all the way around....otherwise when you nail the trim it will bounce back up slightly....so to avoid this you have to cut just the foam a bit smaller than your plywood, fabric need to go around the 2x4 but be sure not to pull it too tight during stapling because you need to have some give for the trim that get nailed on....this all sounds complicated but its not that hard ....it will make sense when you doing hands on....i would take a picture of the back but i have covered the whole thing at the back with muslin...just like those pros do to hide all the raw work...and also this protectes the wall....i will try to draw a diagram to explain better...it only took us 2 hours to do the whole thing from start to finish......i hope i have answered some questions
What a great job you did and thanks for the instructions as I have been trying to figure out how I would make one. I actually bought an ultra suede (micro fibre) drapery panel to use a while back but couldn't decide what style to go with. I think the one you made will be perfect.
So were the 2x4's attached before you started the upholstering? (how??? was the plywood within the board frame or on top of the frame? How was it attached? that's the part I can't figure out) IF framed within the 2x4's, did you staple everything to the 2x4's and then put the trim over that?
Thanks for sharing and great job.
Absolutely beautiful, Mira!!
Here's an enlargement for those who asked:
Mira, you and your husband did a wonderful job on the headboard. Looks quite elegant.
Congrats on posting your attachment :)

very beautiful headboard. keep going with the projects. isn't it addicting!!
Another great DIy from Mira. I can see why you have orders. I made a similar one without the tufting and I am thinking of changing it. Yours looks great and is doable. Definitly gonna give it a try. Thanks for the post. :D
That's awesome! It sounds doable enough (except the button tufting.. that part might be beyond my capabilities) It certainly looks professional. 150 dollars is really reasonable (for materials) to make upholstered headboard of that height. Is your bed a queen or a king size? Can we get the dimensions (finished size)?
Again, great job

my husband did all the frame work and i did all the upholstering , i will try to tell you how i did it ....i might miss out on a step he did...he used a plywood which was framed with 2x4 , i drilled tiny holes for button thread to pass through then i did the upholstering part (pretty basic,...foam,batting and fabric attached with staples) , he then attached mdf trims around the board with a nail gun going straing onto the 2x4 all the way around...(this was previously painted with dark brown) i then filled all the nail holes and did touch up painting, the last part was to attach legs also 2x4 with screws and the whole thing sits on the ground leaning flush against the wall....we probably did the whole this for less than $150....we were on budget but you can use wood trim....and more expensive fabrics like ultra suede....but i used a natural upholstery 100%cotton fabric which i purchased at a textile clearance store for $10 for the whole thing. we are currently brainstorming for headboard in the guest room...will post pictures as soon as we are done.....and it will be different than this one....
Great job! Love the whole bedroom, in fact. Is the headboard microsuede? What did you use for the frame? mdf? wood? is it painted or stained?
How is it attached ? to the wall or to the bedframe?
How much did it end up costing to make?
Fantastic! Sorry for so many questions, but you've done a really impressive job. You'll have to tell us how you did it!
