My Front Garden (picture)

My husband and I started landscaping our small front yard (18'x18') but quickly realized our limitations. We've since then had a professional come in and do the hardscaping. I will be doing the planting myself. I have some hostas of different varieties some boxwood and some euonymous. I'd like some suggestions for other plant material. I'd like a japanese garden look without the structure. The hardscaping is flagstone in green and russet tones. There is also a planter bed in a tumbled stone (grey & buff) and some river rock. Plants that offer both summer and winter interest and are easy to maintain would be best. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your suggestions I will add them to my growing list. I'll be sure to post a picture of the finished look at a later date.

An azalea would be a nice addition. There are so many varieties with different growth habits, and I would choose a compact one with small leaves. A Pieris is also a nice choice, but again you want to select a variety that will not outgrow the space. The foliage is lovely, and the flowers add a bit of interest as well. A Sedum is also a consideration-I like to keep the seed head flowers on over winter for interest, and my favourite is Autumn Joy.

I would also select a bearded iris and a small cluster of miniature iris. They will multiply and spread over time, but you can always remove some to put in a pot for a friend. An ornamental shrub that produces bright berries over winter would be nice, and of course, a red miniature weeping maple would really set the mood.

Good luck with your garden. It looks wonderful!
