I've hated this pinky oak door with brass trim and door knob ever since we moved in. It's in the doorway between the kitchen and dining room. (FYI, the last pic is the door between the kitchen and the hallway -- other than being a pocket door, it's exactly the same. My hubby took the other one down before I had a chance to take a "before" pic).....

yes that makes sense. Thanks for the insight - sometimes it just helps to get another view, so that you don't think you're entirely crazy!!
You appear to have done a lot of work on your home and I love the look you've created. Do you have any pictures on the photo gallery, etc - I would love to see more pics of your beautiful home. It's an inspiration!!
The front door is the same colour. The plan is to paint the pocket door to the kitchen the same colour as well. I don't think I'll be painting any other doors -- there are 5 doors all lumped together at the end of the hall, and I think it'll just be too dark. But I think that's OK, because these brown doors are a different style than the other doors, and these ones are in the more "public" end of the house.
I would say it's OK to paint the doors on one floor only. Really, it comes down to what you like and what you're happy with.
And no, you don't have to paint both sides of a door. If you want to paint the hallway side only, paint that side and the edge of the door that you see when you open the door from the hallway. So if the door opens into the hallway, you would paint the edge that the knob is on the same colour. If the door opens into the room, then you would paint the edge with the hinges the same colour. Hope that makes sense!!
I love the colour you painted the door - it looks very rich and elegant now. My question is "have you painted all of your interior doors the same colour"? Also does anyone know what the norm is as far painting your doors - can you paint your main floor doors and the leave the upper ones alone? Also what should you do if you want to paint your bathroom door, (say the same colour you used) and from the hallway works great but it doesn't really match the bathroom colour inside. Do you need to paint both the inside and outside the same colour?
Just wondering?? thanks
No, I didn't take the glass out. I painted the brass trim with a small brush, and then I used a razor blade to scrape the excess paint off the glass. I figured if I taped off the trim, the paint would seep under and I'd have to remove the excess paint from the glass anyway. And in a sort of weird and twisted way, there's something cathartic about scraping off the paint!! :o
Smoodgie, did you take the glass out to paint the door? I have the same french doors and have been wanting to paint them since the day I moved in.
The other project was the copper squares, not the secret room -- sorry!! :o I was actually going to start working on the secret room over the long weekend -- but the last time I did a painting project Easter weekend, I woke up way too early every day because I was so psyched to paint, and then I spent four days painting instead of relaxing and doing fun stuff!!
The secret room will get done eventually...... :D
jan, that's too funny!! My hubby and I are contemplating getting the panels of our smart car painted -- I think Purple Granite would be perfect!! Because you know, it's very important to match your car colour to your bathroom ;)
yes, smoodge is a hugh tease :D what a beautiful transformation on the doors....i love the new color of them! :clapping: you have been so busy with all these jobs....i can hardly wait to see your secret room... :D
smiles
janetc
OH sure, peek curiosity and tease us mercilessly.
Very dramatic change. Looks great.
I have another painting project that's almost done.....
- the Secret room? ... we've being waiting.
Yesterday I was sitting at a red light, behind a car, sun shining, half day dreaming, thinking 'Purple Granite? What - two weeks ago I wouldn't have even noticed the colour of that car. This site is taking over when I'm not even here. ;)
Jeep, it's a really dark brown. Although not so dark to look black -- it definitely looks brown.
DH wanted to paint the doors in this house black and we never did so the next house theya re black right from the get go. The color you used is it a real black or a really dark brown.
No, not yet :D
I have another painting project that's almost done..... I think you'll like it, DBD :)
that really changed the look of that door. Nice job and are you on a first name basis with the folks at the paint store yet?
Thanks everyone :)
The colour is Sico Nunavut.
I painted over the brass with silver art paint -- the kind that comes in the little plastic bottle. Not sure how well it's going to stand up -- we'll see next time I clean the windows!! I just painted it right over the brass (3 coats).
For the knob, I used a Tremclad primer and silver paint in spray cans. But again, the knob doesn't get too much wear and tear, so I'm not too concerned about how well it'll hold up. Although I used the same primer and paint on the towel holder in the ensuite which gets used every day, and not a scratch or scuff on it in over a year.
I should paint the pocket door too -- but that's another project for another time!!
Wow, very nice!! We are painting all of our doors on the main level this color. What paint color did you use? We found starry night by Behr.... did you use a BM color?
Great work! :clapping:
**WOW**!!!
That is a very impressive update. Looks fantastic! You have to tell us how you did it now. Inquiring minds want to know! :)
Smoodgie - great update! What colour is that? Also, how did you change the colour of the brass? New hardware or paint?
Wow...I like the after much better...Great Job!!
And this is the door now.....
