I am looking for what kind of outside planters to buy. We have steps up to our front doors & then by our front door, we have space on both sides. Ideally, I would like to do outdoor planters, right outside my front door, and then partway down the steps, 2 more (on each side of the railing). Here's my questions:
Do the two at top (by my front door - door is brown - so does planter need to match with this) need to match my front door?
Do the two at the top (by my front door), need to match the two planters part way down the steps???
Does anyone have suggestions on the planters to get? I like the square tops, but I also like the urns...such a dilemma. Any comments & pictures would be helpful.
I found some perfectly square ones, but they are the metal - I liked the square, but not so sure if I like the metal.

Wow, thanks Dawn & Gwen for all the pictures - these pictures are gorgeous. It gives me lots of ideas & lots to think about.
There's no need to match the colour of your door or the house, unless you think that's what would look best. I've seen black planters beside black doors and it looks very nice though.
Go with your gut. And for backup, when you find a pair you like for beside the door, ask yourself if you could paint them if you changed your mind. If the answer is yes, you have more options down the road. That question really helped me when I found some square-topped kinda tall planters in terra cotta. I really like black planters a lot so knowing I could paint them one day made them "it".
I don't think duplicate planters further down the steps are necessary, but it would look good if those ones were similar in colour, shape, or finish to the ones you select for the door. Can you post a picture of your door?
Hello peonygirl,
I also just planned out some planters for the steps leading up to my front door, and I don't necessarily think they should match the front door, but just go for planters in a shade that complements your facade or door. For a brown door, I think white, beige, or dark brown planters would work, or even bright red! Check out this gallery for some inspiration:
