Packing Peanuts

To all you gardners out there I have a question - I have long, narrow planters which consume bags of container soil. I would love to put packing peanuts in the bottom to consume some of the space. Everything is so biodegradable now that I am having a difficult time finding the "S" shape peanuts that I have purchased in the past. Does anyone have an idea where they are available. Conversely, any other ideas?

I"ve seen packing peanut product of some kind in the post office, although I'm not sure of the price. One garden center carries a type of packing peanut too, just for planters.

You could look into floral foam, but I think there's 2 kinds and you don't want the kind that absorbs water. If I'm not mistaken, there is a floral foam product for dried flowers that does not take in moisture. Check with a florist.

You might try a furniture/appliance store. See if they have any styrofoam from unpacked shipments that they would rather you cart off for free. (as opposed to it filling their dumpster)

Got a lot of kids' balls? You might have some you could recycle for this use. We always have a good number of tennis balls that have lost their bounce.

clay (which will eventually shatter) or plastic pots turned up side down in the planters, or empty hard plastic margarine containers with lids to take up space? I use those in the bottom of my urns, they work fine, and they're cheap!

Thanks for the information; unfortunately I have bought them there previously but they no longer carry this type. Just small bags of biodegradable ones (made from corn starch, I believe). I tried them last year and let me tell you they are a disaster. As you can imagine, as soon as they get wet they disintigrate. Next morning all the plants had sunk and I had to take them out of the pots and start over!!

I will keep looking.

Many thanks again.

I think Staples sells the packing peanuts in large bags. You may want to give them a call to make sure before making a trip. :)
