Paint IKEA bookcase

In your October 09 H&H issue, p 86, you show a wonderful way of customizing IKEA bookcases. My question is about painting the back panels. Several websites suggest using a special primer, but you indicate using only the paint. Did this actually work? Did you paint the original IKEA backerboard? How many coats of paint did you use?
Thanks

Hello annemariepol,

Yes, using a primer before painting Ikea bookshelves is a good idea — it will make the painting process easier for you. Our design editors recommend applying one coat of primer to the interior back panels, and then two coats of paint (we used Hello Darkness P1792-3 from Para Paints), all before assembling the bookshelves.

Good luck with your bookshelves!

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
