Paint over lamp?

SusanB's picture

I have a lamp on a side table in my living room. I love the shape, but the colour doesn't really go with the rest of the decor any more. Is it possible to paint over a ceramic style lamp? Any special prep or paint? Thanks.

I also used the rustoleum hammered metal spray paint on a regular boring filing cabinet I had. Frst I lightly sanded it, wiped it and sprayed. I've had it for 5 years nad still looks great.

Just an idea

I am thrilled with the result - the hammered effect was definitely the way to go. For the cost of the can of paint, I have a whole new lamp.

Thanks Rosehip. I've bought a can of paint yesterday - hammered metal look, but in red (not sure which metal that's supposed to be). I wanted red, and my husband pointed out that the hammered metal look might work better - don't need to worry about a totally smooth looking finish that way. I'm really looking forward to getting it done.

Remember when we all had brass lamps? Not anymore! I've used this on everything from brass to wood to ceramic, and it has a great finished look. It's also held up for over two years now!

I just looked that up and it looks like it might be perfect for the lamp. As I said, I love the shape, but the colour is wrong. It was an expensive lamp, so I don't want to have to buy a new one. Thanks.

Rustoleum's hammered metal spray paint works well over ceramic, I've done drawer pulls that are holding up very well, that's another option.

Now I just have to convince my husband that it would look better another colour!

Spraypaint! :-) I've done it. Tape up your cords, though, to prevent them from getting the off-spray. If you get drips, wipe them right away, and continue spraying.
