We also painted counter tops in the past. We did exactly as Nitefall did, with the same result. Use a good quality primer ("sticky") and melamine paint.

I have painted the counter top in our powder room. I used TSP to wash it down, sanded it lightly, then used a primer. The top coat is Melamine paint from Benjamin Moore. If you go to their site they have a "how to". Its held up ok, the room doesn't get that much use.
