Thanks a lot for your reply Mrs. Peacock. For some reason, people think I'm crazy for wanting to paint over brick. I love this look, I see it in magazines all the time. But I'm a bit scrared that if It doesn't look good, there's no going back.
I will certainly give it a serious thought, especially that the brick is stained and will eventually need some sort of cleaning treatment. I also appreciate the great advise about the mantle. We are replacing the original wood fireplace with an electric one for insurance purposes and we will need to fill the gap.

I would be painting that brick in an off white or ivory colour and putting up a really thick wood mantle. You could get a chunk of barn board beam for a rustic look or a chunk of oak and give it a dark reddish brown stain for a classic look. I think it will look fantastic when it is done.
