Refinishing a Dinning Room Suite

I have not been here in years!!!!!

I want to refinish my solid oak dinning rooms suite, table, chairs and china cabinet.

It is currently a washed oak....you know the finish that was popular in the 90s

My partner loves it and I have been fighting to have it refinished for years.

Can not afford to have the entire set refinished pro.....way too much.

So started wondering if I could refinish it or do some type of finish on it ourselves??

Was thinking either a very dark brown, or a grey shade (grey is the prominate colour in my condo, walls, sofa ect), or else a white?

I am wanting to recover the chairs in a turquoise colour which will be the accent colour for the living and dining area.

A family member suggested doing some sort of antique rub on it in a grey just overtop of what is already there....I am wondering if that would work or last?

Wondering if there is some way to refinish it without staining it......I don't think my partner would go for painting it as he loves the wood so that is why I was thinking some sort of rub or glaze or staining?

thanks

well we are more modern in our style overal but that beign said I like the mix of modern and a bit of antinqued, a bit ecletic.

I checked out the chalk paint and I think this could work especially if thinned out with some water like I was reading about as the grain would show.  I guess I am afraid of trying it and messing it up totally!!!

I would be open to doing the china cabinet different actually so it looked a bit less matchy.

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is much talked about on the internet, although I have not tried it myself.  There are a few grey shades that may appeal to you, one being Paris Grey I think and another Country Gray.  I believe it's a bit expensive, but several bloggers seem to be raving about it.  You could probably use google/pinterest to find out more if it appeals to you.  Here's the website:

There's a wonderful tutorial on the Miss Mustard Seed blog, which is really inspirational.  I don't know what style your set is, but the technique she used is most interesting:

I made a note of her favorite glaze recipe.  I'd like to try it.

A really great website for furniture makeover inspiration is:

http://betterafter.blogspot.ca/

You could do a search on either kitchen/dining or  buffets there.  I visit that site daily because I find it so interesting to see the before and afters.

What is the style of your furniture?  Are you planning to have all of it match, or would it be interesting to do something a little different on the china cabinet?
