OK

Try to clean it with warm water, detergent and abrasive brush. It will surely help.
that's the worse problem that could have happened (having to match existing tile)
nice to see the builder used good quality materials (albeit with poor taste in fixtures)
as my luck would have it the soap dish came off fairly easily but so did the 2 tiles it was stuck to.
good thing found they did use cement board in the shower so there was no damage to the board itself.
so i've had to replace the tiles and grout and silicone the corners.
good riddance you too small to hold anything other than soap scum dish!!
well maybe a bit better than the type I thought it was (the one that's often the size of a large tile and is embedded in the wall)
if it's surface mount there's a chance it's silicone-mounted (as grout doesn't stick extremely well to a shiny tile surface)
the metal pic was just an example of what is sometimes used to fix the aftermath of a broken tile while removing the recessed ones
it may come off in one piece without breaking the tile - let us know how it works out
nope it's not the metal type. it's the ceramic molded looking type. it is mounted directly on top of the tiles and does not receed into the wall.
i was hoping to cut the caulking away and gently (ya that's right) pry it away without cracking the surrounding tiles. assuming there is adhesive on the back of this dish, which there likley will be so the tiles behind it will for sure crack and need replacing. standard 6x6 white tiles .
sounds like one of those little piddly jobs that can turn bad quickly but i detest that soap scum magnet of a soap dish that is in there! it must go!!
i'll let you know how it works out.
:D-
the type with a little holder for a facecloth that sticks out (couldn't find an online pic but there have been millions of those installed)?
yup like Jem007 said those are installed with a bucket of tile adhesive then get grouted in with the rest of the tile job... it's in there for a while (usually till someone grabs on to the little bar to get out of the tub and rips out a chunk of wall....)
could try cutting away the surrounding grout (knife or a grout removing tool or one of those rotary Dremel-type tools if you have one), then try to cut through all the stuff behind (maybe one of those drywall keyhole saws) and carefully remove...
or remove the grout around all 9 surroundlng tiles so that you can pop them away - I would say high risk of cracking one in either case (don't suppose you have spare tiles....)
what are you thinking of using as a replacement?
sometimes when they fail they get replaced with these metal types - sorry about the fuzzy pic, can't find anything better right now (not expensive but look a bit blah), they often are a bit larger to help cover the mess
if you go this route, put a good silicone bead behind the lip when you put it in, and a dab of silicone behind the screw holes as well, so water doesn't get in behind - then the usual silicone bead on the outside (highly recommend the painter's tape trick for these, makes a nice finished bead)
the fishing line taking a mirror off trick? I would do that first....
My soap dish was installed by putting a hole in the wall and then slapping about a pound of joint compound behind it. I just about lost a whole wall when I took that sucker out!
