A thread of accomplishments or Before and Afters

Carmie's picture

It would be nice if we can start a thread of before and afters or even looks that we have accomplished that we are quite happy with. I would love to see how others have decorated their own homes.

Right now I am in the middle of having our home built but once its done and decorated I will post pics of the rooms I have done. This way all of you that have given me amazing suggestions can see your own ideas at work.

I think I'm done... I just need to get the hardwood in.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions for our house. The "blue area" above the fireplace (which is actually surrounded by realy dark grey tiles that for some reason look blue in the picture) is a quick painting that I did on a large canvis to cover up the cubbyhole that our tv sits in. If you look at the before picture you will see what I mean... Some day we hope to replace that painting with some real art.

PS. Dekota_Skye I loved the brick in your kitchen!

Checked out your pictures... everything looks great! What did you mean by the painting hides the TV ... doe the TV sit above the fireplace is it behind the blue area (I didn't really know what that was) VERY creative.
I LOVE your kitchen - that is the color I will paint if I EVER get brave enough.

Great pictures, thebrixhouse! I especially like your stained glass window...very nice.

For toile fabric, you may want to check out Designer Fabrics in Toronto. You can see them online at www.designerfabriconline.com - you can even rent a swatch.

I love your kitchen but I'm very partial because it's almost identical to the colours I used in mine. :-) http://photos.yahoo.com/dekota_skye you can see the red (Cranberry Zing), and the white cabinets.

I love your living room, too. I'd love to see your artwork close up. I also love contemporary, but with a lot of warm features.

I have been trying to get some pictures for you all up on this website but not having much luck - they all are very fussy when I make them small enough... We have a website that we have posted the pictures at though if you want to take a look :-)

We have many other plans that we will hopefully be adding soon. As it says on the website, we are looking for a soft cream on white toile for the bed so if any one has suggestions of where we could find it? A friend of our is welding us a iron and glass coffee table and two bedside tables... I could go on and on with the projects we have in mind :-)

I was wondering if you could send me an attachment of the headboard that you made with the suede and wood. I have been looking for ideas for a headboard when I came across your picture. I thought it was great. Could you give me more details how to do it? Mainly with attaching the panels onto the backboard? Thank you for your help!

Just to repeat what's already been said -- your headboard looks great :-)

I have a colour suggestion for you -- Benjamin Moore's Crown Point Sand. Sorry, I'm not sure what the number is. We used this colour on our hallway walls, and it's really nice. Not too dark, not too light, and it really works well with dark brown and black furniture/accessories.

sounds like we have similar taste michy! I can't wait to get some new pillow shams and get rid of those white ones.. all i have right now is white! haha sounds like our beds are just reversed.. i have the camel coloured ultrasuede on the headboard panels and the chocolate brown velvet duvet cover and shams :) I'm going to check out that wall colour.. let me know of any more updates! :)

Sorry MamboGirl, it's your bedroom that looks like mine, not Carmie whom I had previously thought.

Carmie, I love your bedroom. It looks like mine, however, I used a dark chocolate brown for my head board panels, and have a camel colored ultrasuede duvet cover and shams. I just painted my bedroom BM HC-21 Huntington beige.I wonder how that color would work for you? I'll post some before and afters soon. Michy

I hate that these pics have to be so small. This is with the old lamps from the old style bedroom. Our new lamps, as shown in the first redo pic are the ones that we just got at HD. We love them. THey really suit the room. We're repainting the bedroom, also. Just trying to decide on a colour.

This is one of the after pics. We just installed the new lighting. I'll post another pic (better) of the room, before we added the lighting.

Hmmm... I've just come upon this site and thought I'd join in. The idea of before and after pics is a great one! I kick myself - while I'm not at the "after" stage yet I'm in the process of re-decorating and missed getting any "before" pictures.
Mambogirl - GREAT headboard!! :o)

Thanks everyone for your comments. I was thinking the same thing, a light neutral on the walls. As for the pillows, I know I definately have to change them! It really was not that expensive to make, the most expensive part was the faux suede, which came up to 40$ but I have plenty left over, almost half. Then the wood and the wood stain... We got a great deal on the backboard.. Home Depot gave it to us for $0.47 because it was just scrap. And the board we used to make the upholstered panels was $5. In all, I'd say it cost around $90. We had fun making it and I'm very pleased with the end result.

The headboard turned out beautiful. Was is difficult to make? If you don't mind me asking, was it expensive? I suggest you paint the walls a really light neutral. It will make the bed stand out and give it center stage!

Love your headboard, great job!
I think the room will be even more complete once you have your walls painted. What colour are your painting the walls?
One thing I can suggest is to change you white pillows with pillows that have a 2 or 3 inch border all around. Some even have a box-shaped thin dark brown ribbon or simple embroidery. I think ROOTS Canada sells them at Sears. You can also lay your pillows on the bed as oppose to leaning them against your lovely headboard for a more modern bed dressing.

I will post some pictures as soon as I get my walls painted. I'm liking the direction my bedroom is going in, but it is still an embarrassing purple colour! This is what it looks like now, next step is to buy a couple of accent pillows and paint the walls a nice neutral colour. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free :) My boyfriend and I made that headboard, i love it :)

I am renting at the moment and don't have any great pictures to post, but I would love to see how everyone's before and afters turn out!

I think this is a wonderful idea. Please do post your before and after pics. I love looking at pictures of what people have done no matter how big or small the improvement. Unfortunately, I am not yet in this century (!) and do not own a digital camera so I can't do the same (yet anyway).
